Killings in Isla Vista (2014)

Late in the evening of May 23, 2014 from approximately 21:17 to 21:33 ^[6], an unknown person started firing a semi-automatic pistol ^[7] at passers-by from the windows of a black BMW 328i Coupé ^[4] , traveling with speeding ^[9] , in several Areas of the University of California Campus ^[10] , two thirds of which are students ^[11] , is located near the city of Santa Barbara , California .

Prior to this, a series of murders began in the attacker's apartment on Seville Road, where three men were stabbed to death ^{[12] [13] [14]} .

He then began shooting at the Alpha Phi women's house located near the campus of the University of California. Two members of the Delta Delta women's society were killed there, and a third was injured while walking down the sidewalk. Before that, the criminal came to the door and knocked, but no one answered ^{[15] [16] [17] [18]} . Then he started shooting again: one person was injured, and another was superficially injured ^{[19] [20]} .

After that, he drove two blocks to the “Deli Mart” on Pardall Road, where he got out of his car and shot a student. After that, he was noticed by four patrolmen, but they did not recognize him as an arrow ^{[8] [19] [21]} . He then drove to the “The Loop” area, where he shot two pedestrians on the sidewalk, but missed, and drove to “Del Playa Drive”, where he aimed a gun at the woman, but did not fire ^[19] . The offender shot at about twelve locations ^[26] , including IV Deli Mart, where one person was fatally wounded, and in a 7-Eleven store, where a woman was injured in the leg ^{[27] [28] [29]} . The area was cordoned off by the police, local authorities declared the alarm and asked the residents not to leave their homes ^[30] . Police spokeswoman Kelly Hoove said:

The police received a call to 911 about 21:27 local time, and a few minutes later, at 21:33 ^{[19] [29]} , a shootout began between the police and the alleged perpetrator. He managed to get away from the chase, injuring the cyclist along the way ^{[9] [32]} , drive past the church in which the service was held ^{[13] [21] [33]} , hurt four pedestrians, but during the second firefight with his police, he crashed into a parked the car. The suspect was found dead in a car with a bullet wound, but it was unclear whether he himself shot himself ^{[34] [35]} . It was later announced that he had committed suicide ^{[36] [37]} .

Seven people were killed, including the shooter himself ^[38] ; according to earlier data, seven were injured and were hospitalized ^[39] .

Three men were slaughtered in the attacker's apartment. The victims were Chen Yuan "James" Hong 20 years; George Chen is 19 years old and Weihan "David" Wang is 20 years old ^{[40] [41]} . Hong and Chen were the attacker's roommates, the police were investigating whether Wang was his roommate or visited the apartment on the night of the murder ^{[13] [42] [43] [44] [45]} . All three were students of the University of California at Santa Barbara ^[19] .

Catherine Cooper, 22, and Veronica Weiss, 19, students of the University of California were killed in the house of the sorority; Christopher Michael-Martinez was later shot dead for 20 years, another student was killed at the Deli Mart. Thirteen people were injured, eight of them with gunshot wounds and four with blunt injuries due to a car strike. The origin of the thirteenth injury has not been determined ^[46] . Eleven wounded were taken to Santa Barbara Hospital, two patients in serious condition and five more people of moderate severity, and the other four were examined and released ^[47] .

Richard Martinez, whose son Christopher was the victim of the shooting, shared his pain with journalists: “When will this madness end? .. Too many have already died. We have to say to ourselves: “No one should die any more” ” ^[48] .

The shooter was identified as 22-year-old Elliot Roger ( July 24, 1991 - May 23, 2014 ) ^{[28] [49]} born in London in the family of Peter Roger , assistant director of the movie “The Hunger Games ”, and Malaysian Lee Chin ^[50] . At the age of five, the family moved to the United States, where he was raised by a stepmother, actress Sumaya Akabuni ^[49] . His grandfather is a photographer George Roger ^[6] . Alan Shifman, a lawyer for the Roger family, said that his clients believe that "their child was the same intruder." According to parents, Elliot Roger suffered from Asperger's syndrome , in which the ability to social interaction was seriously impaired ^[51] (but the diagnosis was not formally established ^[52] ), and visited a psychiatrist ^[48] . Roger was a student at Santa Barbara City College, where he was allegedly mocked ^[28] , and he barely managed to make friends ^[53] . The Rogers family contacted the police and reported that it was their child who posted the video ^[53] .

In a video posted on his YouTube account the day before the shooting entitled “Elliot Roger's Retribution”, he complained that the girls didn’t pay any attention to him and at 22, he was still a virgin , so he promised to arrange a day pay back and take revenge on women for their suffering, describing the details of the impending attack ^[7] and outlining their motives and plans ^[33] . In particular, he stated that “this is my last video. Tomorrow is the day of retribution. The day when I will take revenge on humanity ”, noting that“ he will kill any person ”that he will meet on the streets. District police chief Bill Brown confirmed that the alleged shooter is “insane” ^[54] and this video “has a connection with what happened” ^[55] :

Roger had an account on Facebook , which contained messages expressing loneliness and rejection ^[32] . In addition, in the Internet forums, Roger stated that he opposes interracial dating, making several racist messages regarding blacks, Indians and Asians ^[56] . In his 138-page manifesto called “My Twisted World”, Elliot also spoke about some of his plans:

In the summer of 2013, he claimed that he was beaten by several people, but investigators suggested that he was the first to show aggression. The second incident occurred in January 2014 , when he accused his roommate of stealing and made a civil arrest. A neighbor was later arrested and put on trial ^{[14] [58]} . A week before the shooting, Roger's parents told the police about his behavior, but the officers who interviewed Elliot described him as polite and kind ^[28] .

Santa Barbara's sheriff Bill Brown confirmed that Elliot Roger is the gunman ^{[13] [23]} and is suspected that he shot three people in his apartment before shooting it ^[48] . Three semi-automatic pistols were found in his car - one Glock 34 Long Slide and two SIG Sauer P226 s, and 400 unused ammunition ^{[13] [14]} .
