Description

Body length 34–36 cm, weight 150–300 g. Coloring of the upper side of the body is light olive, gray or bluish in color with numerous orange-red and white rings and spots. Depending on the lighting and the condition of the animal, its color is subject to noticeable changes. Bright black and white transverse stripes located on the tail are very characteristic of young geckos, which in combination with sharp tail movements is used to scare away enemies.

Unlike other geckos, males lead a solitary lifestyle, choosing a permanent shelter, in the area of which they always hunt. In the area where they meet, males show their presence with loud noises sounds . This cry is sometimes repeated up to ten times in a row and suddenly stops if the lizard is frightened by something. In a similar way, echoing each other, they guard their hunting plots, letting their neighbors know that the territory is occupied. Occasionally geckos scream during the day. They are mainly nocturnal.

In case of danger, the gecko opens its mouth wide and hisses softly, and while holding it, it tries to bite, making loud croaking sounds, and it is extremely difficult to open its closed jaws without damaging them.

Habitat and habitat

Gecko Toki lives in Southeast Asia : in southeast India, Bangladesh , Indonesia, the Philippines and New Guinea . Man was introduced to North America [2] . Here he adapted well, especially in the USA (Texas, Florida, Hawaii), Belize , and the islands of the Caribbean.

Geckos currents love wooded places. They live in hollows of trees.

Nutrition

They feed on invertebrates, however, they often eat other small geckos, including cubs of their own species, chicks, small rodents, and vegetables.

Reproduction

Egg-laying geckos. Mating begins at the end of winter. They lay their rather large eggs in the hollows of trees. The female attaches them to the irregularities of the wood, and the inner wall of the hollow is often literally dotted with the eggs of these geckos, which are at various stages of incubation. Usually, after the hatching of the cub, a significant part of the egg shell remains glued to the wall of the hollow, and the next masonry is thus layered on top of the old ones. After 3 months, young geckos appear 67–72 mm long.

The life expectancy of geckos currents in nature reaches up to 7-8 years, in captivity - up to 25 years.
