Description

A medium-sized grasshopper, 20–25 mm long, with a thick overweight body. Coloring is dark brown with a yellowish pattern on the pronotum in males. The head is spherical in shape with round eyes. Pronotum nearly three times as long as the front thighs. It is flattened from above, with sharp lateral keels, which converge slightly anteriorly, and with a transverse transverse keel. Large teeth extend along the posterior margin of the pronotum. The wings of males are greatly shortened, do not protrude from under the pronotum, and in females the wings are underdeveloped. Holes of the hearing organs are located on the front legs and are narrow, slit-like. Hind femur thickened. The female ovipositor is long, up to 16-17 mm; in its apical half, it is gently bent down [1] .

Biology

It lives on fallow and virgin steppes, and mainly herbaceous meadows with shrubs. It feeds on vegetation. Usually insects stay on the surface of the soil, occasionally rises to the lower parts of the stems of plants. The breeding season is in August. During the breeding season, males chirp loudly, attracting females. Singing males are found at dusk and in the morning on the tops of plants and open areas of soil. Eggs are laid by the female in the soil among plants. Eggs hibernate, from which larvae hatch in the spring in May. The larval stage lasts 2.5–3 months [1] .

Range

Endemic to the steppe zone of Eurasia. Steppes from Ukraine to Kazakhstan and the southeast of Western Siberia, Ciscaucasia . The species range covers European and Asian to the southeast of Western Siberia , steppe regions [1] [2] .

Strength

Limiting factors: plowing and isolation of virgin lands, degradation of steppe plant communities as a result of unregulated grazing and haying [2] .
