Biography

Meinhard von Gerkan comes from a family of Baltic Germans . His father died at the front during World War II , his mother died shortly after their departure from Poznan . Gerkan grew up in an orphanage in Hamburg . He was married twice, he has six children. Consists of kinship with the archaeologist Armin von Gerkan .

In 1964, Gerkan completed his architectural education at the Braunschweig Higher Technical School . In 1965, together with Folkwin Marg, he established the architectural bureau gmp in Hamburg. In the first two years, partners managed to win eight architectural competitions, including with the Berlin-Tegel Airport project, which was their first project of this magnitude.

In 1974, Herkan accepted an invitation to work at the Braunschweig Technical University , where until 2002 he headed the Institute of Architectural Design. The architectural bureau gmp has also completed projects to expand the airports of Hamburg and Stuttgart, the new metropolitan Central Station and the reconstruction of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Currently, the architectural bureau is actively working on projects in China.
