Biography
Representative of the Scottish Baronial clan Sinclair . The eldest son and successor of Henry I Sinclair, Earl of Orkney , from a marriage to Jane Heliburton, daughter of Sir John Heliburton of Dierleton . In 1400, after the death of his father, Henry Sinclair inherited the Orkney Islands . It was in double vassal dependence on Norway and Scotland.
In September 1402, Henry Sinclair participated on the side of the Scots at the battle of Homildon Hill with the British. The Scots suffered a severe defeat, and the whole color of Scottish chivalry was in English captivity. Among the captives was Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney, but then he was released for ransom.
In March 1406, Henry Sinclair accompanied Prince Jacob, Duke of Rothsey , the second son of King Robert III of Scotland, during his trip to France. The ship on which Prince Jacob and his retinue sailed was captured by English pirates . Henry Sinclair was captured by Prince Jacob, but was soon released.
In 1420, the Earl of Orkney, Henry Sinclair, died of the flu .
Family and Children
Around 1407, he married Egidia Douglas, daughter of Sir William Douglas of Nitsdale (1370–1392) and Aegidia Stewart, daughter of King Robert II of Scotland, Scott II . Children:
- William Sinclair (1410-1484), 3rd Earl of Orkney (1420 / 1422-1470), 1st Earl of Caithness (1455-1476), Lord Admiral of Scotland, Lord Chancellor of Scotland (1454-1456)
