Biography
Louis-Jacques-Maurice Bonald was born on October 30, 1787 in the city of Millau, in the family of Louis Gabriel Ambroise Bonald [1] .
At one time he was a fashionable preacher in the Saint-Germain suburb of Paris, then coadjutor of Cardinal Fesch in the Archdiocese of Lune, and in 1823 he was appointed Bishop of Le Puy [1] .
In the collision of high clergy with the judiciary (1825), he, as a true pet of the Jesuits, showed the beginnings of such fanatical intolerance that he aroused even the displeasure of the court against himself [1] .
In 1839, Bonald was appointed Lyon archbishop and primate of Gaul, in 1841 - cardinal. From that time on, he finally assumed the defense of ultramontanism in France. His belligerent pastoral messages about the new edition of Dupin's β Manuel du droit ecclΓ©siastique β and the new school law Vilmen gave rise to passionate polemics in the chamber and in the press [1] .
After the coup d'Γ©tat in France, on December 2, 1851, Bonald, by virtue of his cardinal rank, entered the new imperial senate [1] .
Against Renanβs Life of Christ , he published a pamphlet in which he betrayed the author to anathema [1] .
Louis-Jacques-Maurice Bonald died on February 25, 1870 in the city of Lyon [1] .
