Biography
At the age of 19, John read the cult book “ On the Road ” by Jack Kerouac , took $ 500 and went off to hitchhike around Europe. He spent several months in England, then in France and Spain, which fascinated him. For 8 months of wandering around Europe and North Africa, John became addicted to dancing. When the money ran out, John King returned to the United States, served in the army and got married.
The love of dancing led him to the career of a professional ballroom dancer , during which he, along with his sister Sissy, was four times (1960-1963) won the US Ballroom Dance Championship [1] . When John reached the age limit for professional performances, he worked for a while as a coach and choreographer.
Soon, King invited Shirley McLain , a Hollywood star and the owner of Golden Globe , for her role in the comedy detective, Troubles with Harry , Alfred Hitchcock and Oscar for " And They Ran Over." The actress considered John a talented and charismatic person and offered him the job of manager of her shows on Broadway . He began to produce and direct productions, as well as write scripts. A career in show business seemed to be promising. John learned a lot during this period of his life. Work as a producer in conditions of inconceivable competition is an extremely difficult and responsible task.
However, John was looking for something else. He was already twice divorced, his beloved daughter did not communicate with him, he felt that his way of life greatly undermined his health and emotional balance.
“One side of show business is fame, money, applause; the other is alcohol, drugs, endless parties, lack of sleep, vanity, dirt and devastation ”
- John King
Once the decision became obvious - at the age of 43, John left the show business. John broke old ties and looked for work for a long time, until he got into a company that was engaged in transformational trainings.
At first, he was just on the hook and he studied various techniques. Five years later, he was already able to conduct trainings and seminars. John believes that he owes success in transforming his former boss and teacher Jerome Downes.
“Once Jerome called me and said:“ You are a talented and hardworking person, but you have a rotten look at yourself. Try to live as if in my role for three months and see how it goes. ”I did so, from where I later deduced five levels of sensation of a leader or personality - “Life is trash”, “My life is trash”, “I am cool”, “We are beautiful”, “Life is beautiful”
- John King
The second mentor John King often recalls is Warner Erhard. These people, using the funds earned by the trainings, were engaged in charity work, which was close to John.
Consulting Jobs
In the 80s, when King began to teach and advise companies, his ideas were too revolutionary. They consisted in the fact that it is impossible to change the strategy in the company without changing the culture. If you do not understand people, do not understand their condition, motives, relationships, it is impossible to set up an orchestra, on the coordination of which the implementation of any strategy depends. On this wave, John, co-authored with David Logan, wrote his first book, The Coaching Revolution [2] . At the time of its writing (2004), the concept of “coaching” is still a novelty for many. For many years, John had to experiment and prove to clients the effectiveness of his approaches.
John's first individual work to create a more adaptive culture was carried out at the Cedar-Sinai Medical Center . John's list of customers has gradually become more and more impressive. He has worked with Fortune companies , organization leaders, and government officials. The list of clients includes the largest companies in the USA: Intel , Southern California Edison , CB Richard Ellis , Amgen , American Express .
For ten years, John has advised CBRE Group Coaching brokers, he worked as a corporate trainer at Colliers International - one of the largest real estate companies in the world. Long-term cooperation with Zappos led to the creation of 60 cases, widely used by the company at present.
John regularly lectures and holds colloquiums at the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California , Eller Business College at the University of Arizona . Each year, the deans of these faculties invite John to create programs in the areas of leadership and strategy. Among the students of the programs: undergraduate students, MBA students, graduate schools and adult professionals. For example, in the framework of the University of Arizona leadership programs, John King became state officials, including positions equivalent to the Minister of Emergencies, Health, Energy and others.
Not so long ago, John became one of the invited trainers of SIBF (International Business Fund) programs for the development of leaders in various regions - Eurasia (CELA), Southeast Asia (SEALA), and the Middle East (MELA). CELA has been working for 10 years, of which John has been teaching for 4 years, MELA has been working for 4 years, during which John has been constantly cooperating with the program, and SEALA was organized in 2013, and John immediately joined the program. Programs are designed for adults who seek to improve themselves as leaders and improve the situation in their organizations.
Team Leadership
The second book, co-authored with David Logan and Hali Fisher-Wright - Tribal Leadership (Team Excellence) - brought John a particular success. In 2011, the book held the first position in the New York Times bestseller list for three weeks. On Amazon, the book is included in the 100 best-selling business manuals [3] . Phil Jackson - Michael Jordan's trainer - applies King's principles to team play. In his book “11 Rings”, he repeatedly refers to John’s book as the best business guide for organizing culture in a company. The book received many reviews from famous people in the US business community and the press [4] .
Based on eight years of research by more than 24,000 people working in large corporations, the authors have developed a way in which leaders of organizations can evaluate the structure of their team in terms of tribal culture. The rating scale includes five stages of organization. The authors also reveal specific tools that can improve the effectiveness of the team, using approaches of "tribal superiority." [five]
