Rozanova, Lyudmila Semenovna

She was born on July 9, 1938 in the working village of Reutovo (since 1940 - the city of Reutov ) in the Moscow Region .

In 1958 she entered the laboratory of desk processing at the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (RAS). Next year, she moved to the group that became the basis of the laboratory of natural science methods being formed at the Institute. In the future, her entire creative life was connected with this laboratory.

In the laboratory, L. S. Rozanova mastered the method of archaeological metallography and in her work she continued the direction introduced into archeology by her teacher B. A. Kolchin (1914-1984).

In 1971 she graduated from the Department of Archeology at the Department of History of Moscow State University .

In 1981, she defended her thesis on the topic: “The history of iron-working production among the pre-Slavic population of the Volga-Oka interfluve in the 1st millennium AD” .

The very first published article, “Forging Craft Technique in the Old Russian City of Serensk,” characterized L. S. Rozanova as a meticulous researcher who was able to notice the smallest details in the material being analyzed. Her work was characterized by close attention to analytical data, attempts to justify and explain all, even, as it seemed at first glance, unimportant facts. Based on the fundamental basis of the results of specific analyzes, she went on to broad historical generalizations. In her works, L. S. Rozanova repeatedly emphasized that metallography is only a method for archaeologists, while the main task of the study is to recreate historical processes.

L. S. Rozanova began her expeditionary activity in the Novgorod archaeological expedition. One of her last printed works was written on Novgorod materials.

For the scientific activity of L. S. Rozanova, a wide coverage (both in chronological and cultural-geographical terms) of the studied objects was inherent. She studied materials from the early Iron Age (Ananyinskaya, Dyakovo culture) to the late Middle Ages (Moscow, monuments of the Pripechorye). The geography of her work includes almost all of Eastern Europe from Estonia in the west to the Urals in the east and from Karelia in the north to the Eastern Black Sea coast in the south.

Of great importance for the history of ancient Russian craft is the conclusion of L. S. Rozanova (at the same time G. A. Voznesenskaya came to the same conclusion) about the difference in the blacksmith traditions of Northern and Southern Russia. After analyzing the results of metallographic studies of more than 1700 knives from monuments of various Old Russian lands, the researcher concluded that the blacksmithing of the southern principalities was characterized by the use of simple technologies (the predominance of all-iron and all-steel objects). L. S. Rozanova saw the technological originality of the North Russian lands in the preferred use of welded structures (three-layer package and welding).

The works of L. S. Rozanova are important not only for domestic specialists. Her articles are published in the UK , Czech Republic , Italy , Japan , Hungary , Poland . She took part in conferences in Sweden , Hungary, and the Czech Republic. One of the last was a report read at the Second Archaeological Congress in Suzdal .

L. S. Rozanova suddenly died on December 11, 2008, right at her workplace, preparing materials for the next job on a computer. After it remained a great reserve of materials, articles and monographs almost ready for publication.
