After Adolf II retired to the monastery in 1160, his sons divided the inheritance: Eberhard received Altena, Engelbert received the county of Berg.
Thanks to allegiance to Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Cologne archbishops Engelbert managed to significantly increase the income of the county. He expanded his holdings to include Bensberg, Neu-Windeck, and Elberfeld.
In 1188, in exchange for a pledge of 100 marks, Engelbert received land from Arnold von Teveren on the right bank of the Rhine near Holthausen. The deposit was not returned, and these possessions were transferred to Berg.
In May 1189, as part of the troops of Frederick Barbarossa, Engelbert went to the Third Crusade and in the same year in July died in the Serbian city of Kubin near the border with Byzantium .
He was succeeded by his son - Adolf III . His other son, Engelbert II, became archbishop of Cologne .
The wife of Engelbert I was Margarita Geldern, daughter of Count Heinrich Geldern and Agnes von Arstein.
