Biography

The eldest son of (? - 1479), the master of Hales, and Janet Hay, grandson of Patrick Hepburn (? - 1483), 1st Lord Hales.

In 1482/1483, after the death of his grandfather Patrick Hepburn, he inherited the title of Lord Hales. In July-August 1482, he led the defense of the castle of Berik , besieged by the British army under the command of the Duke Richard of Gloucester . On August 24, the castle capitulated, and Berik-upon-Tweed was annexed to the English possessions.

In June 1480, Patrick Hepburn was appointed Sheriff . He was also one of the initiators of the armistice with England on September 20, 1484.

In 1488, he became one of the leaders of the baronial rebellion against the Scottish king James III . The rebels were led by the eldest son of King James, Duke of Rothsey . The actual leaders of the movement, however, were representatives of the South Scottish clans of Hume and Hepburn. On July 11, 1488, at the Battle of Sochibern, Patrick Hepburn commanded the vanguard of the rebel army. The 16th century writer Robert Birell believed that he was one of those responsible for death after the battle of King James III.

Patrick Hepburn held a number of major government posts under the reign of Scottish King James IV of Stewart : royal court master, custodian of Edinburgh Castle, Sheriff of Edinburgh and Huddington . His son Adam Hepburn was appointed head of the royal stable.

September 10, 1488 Patrick Hepburn get the title of Lord Admiral of Scotland. On October 13, 1488, he took possession of the castles of and Botwell from the new king, which were confiscated from the previous owner, , who fled to England. On October 17, Patrick Hepburn, as the owner of Botwell, was elevated to the Earl's title .

In September 1491, Earl Botwell traveled to France on a diplomatic mission in order to secure the restoration of the Old Union against England. He sailed from North Berik aboard the ship Katherine. In addition to him, the Scottish embassy included the archbishop and dean of Glasgow .

On March 6, 1492, Earl Botwell received possession of the land in Lauderdale with the Hermitage Castle , which was previously owned by Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus .

April 1, 1495 he was appointed captain of the castle of Dambraton . He was one of the diplomats who prepared the conclusion of the marriage contract of the King of Scotland, James IV Stuart, with the English Princess Margarita Tudor .

October 18, 1508, Patrick Hepburn passed away, his titles and possessions were inherited by the eldest son Adam Hepburn, 2nd Earl of Botwell.

He was twice married. In 1481, he married Janet (Joanne) Douglas, daughter of , and Princess . They had one daughter:

  • Joanna Hepburn (? - 1558), wife of , who died in the Battle of Flodden.

In February 1491, he entered into a second marriage - with Margaret Gordon, daughter of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntley . Their kids:
