Biography
Born March 28, 1981 in Kramatorsk. He began to engage in Greco-Roman wrestling at the age of 8 at the Sports School of the Blooming Sports Club with Oleg Yevtushenko. In 2000, he won medals at the European and World Youth Championships.
Since 2001, he trained at the Azovmash club in Mariupol under the leadership of Gennady Uzun and was a member of the national team of Ukraine. In 2003, he won the bronze medal of the European Championship in Belgrade . In 2004, he participated in the Athens Olympics . At the beginning of the Olympic tournament, he won three matches against rivals from the Czech Republic , the USA and Georgia , but in the semifinal he lost to the Hungarian wrestler Istvan Mayorosh , and in the battle for third place he represented Greece Artyom Kuregyan and was not included in the number of winners.
In 2007, Vakulenko died in a car accident. A car of the brand Daewoo Lanos , which was driven by a friend of his, crashed into a power transmission pole on one of the streets of Kramotorsk, and Vakulenko, sitting in the front passenger seat, received serious injuries, from which he died on the spot.
