Biography

Nikolai Apollonovich Tipolt was born on August 1, 1864 in the Borisovka settlement of Valuysky district (now Belgorod region ) [1] . Representative of the baronial clan Tipolt .

Military Service

On September 29, 1886, after graduating from the Marine Corps, he was promoted to warrant officer , and on January 1, 1893, he was promoted to lieutenant of the fleet. He taught drawing and geometry in the Marine Corps.

In 1900-1901 he served as the junior detached chief of the Naval Cadet Corps. March 24, 1903 was dismissed from service, for the determination of state affairs. It was renamed college assessors and was appointed assistant director of His Imperial Majesty's Own Libraries.

March 7, 1905, in connection with the outbreak of the Russo-Japanese War , he was transferred to the Naval Department, with admission to the admiralty as head captain , with production captains.

On December 6, 1905 he was promoted “for distinction” to lieutenant colonel for admiralty.

From September 11, 1906 to September 26, 1910 he was the senior separated chief of the Marine Corps.

On April 18, 1910, he was promoted to admiralty colonel “for distinction,” and on November 22, 1910, he was renamed Captain 1 rank .

From July 26, 1910 - junior assistant, from June 28, 1914 - senior assistant to the commander of the St. Petersburg port.

In 1914-1917, he was chairman of the special presence for the appointment of pensions and benefits for injuries to the craftsmen and workers of the St. Petersburg port.

Since October 1, 1916 he was a senior assistant to the commander of the St. Petersburg port for the transport of goods.

December 6, 1916 was promoted to Major General of the Fleet "for distinction."

March 31, 1917 was credited to the reserve ranks of the Ministry of the Sea and in the same year was dismissed from service.

Genealogy and heraldist

Nikolai Apollonovich Tipolt was a member of the Genealogical Society and a member of the Imperial Society for the Promotion of Arts in St. Petersburg. Collaborated in the publication "Russian Heraldry".

 

In 1915, together with the manager of the Stamp branch of the Senate Department of Heroldia, Vladislav Kreskentievich Lukomsky, on the recommendation of the Imperial Society for the Promotion of Arts, wrote and published the book “Russian Heraldry. Guide to the compilation and description of emblems ”, which presented a brief reference guide to understanding the emblems and their description. The second part of the book - “Fundamentals of Heraldry” was composed by Baron N. A. Tipolt [2] .

Until 1916 he was the treasurer of the Russian Genealogical Society.

In 1919 he was a senior archivist at the Academy of the History of Material Culture.

Gathered a large personal collection of artistic bas-reliefs and medals. Before leaving for emigration, he donated his collection to the Hermitage .

Emigration

In 1920 he emigrated to France . In Paris, he worked at the Anar fashion studio of Prince Vladimir Arbelov (he drew sketches of models) [3] .

He was one of the founders of the Historical-Genealogical Society in France. Worked on a common coat of arms for names that did not approve their emblems in the heraldic department of Russia.

Since 1934 he was Chairman of the Russian Historical Society and a member of the Committee of Elders of the Maritime Assembly in Paris.

In 1936 he went to his daughter in Paraguay.

Nikolay Apollonovich Tipolt died on July 5, 1948 in , Paraguay .
