Description

Representatives of this cave genus (their length is about 3 mm) showed a unique in nature change in the roles of females (in which the penis developed) and males (the penis is reduced) during mating. Females have a long penis-shaped process (its length reaches 15% of the total body length; it is called gynosome, gynosome ), and in males, instead of penises, the genitals are simplified to a tubular vagina (a strongly reduced phallosome instead of a penis). It is the female who “anchors” the male (introducing her gynosome into his body). The mating process lasts 40–70 hours. Presumably, females receive from their partners not only sperm with hereditary material for reproduction, but also nutrient seminal fluid important in the conditions of scarcity of food resources in dry Brazilian caves [2] [3] [4] . Although in some other animals, cases of partial change of sexual roles are known, where the female leads life either as a promiscuity sexual aggressor (for example, scorpion ), while others changed the anatomy, where the female penetrates male organs ( seahorses ), none developed a complete reversal sexual roles and anatomical changes, as in Hayot genus Neotrogla . This is the first in the wild real female penis (with developed muscles and hooks) [5] [6] .

The genus was first isolated in 2010 by Swiss entomologist Charles Lienhard ( Charles Lienhard ; Natural History Museum of the City of Geneva, Geneva , Switzerland ) [1] .
