History
Even during the Warring States, when the ruler of the Qi kingdom went to war on the Yan kingdom, he stopped at this place to repair leather goods. Here was a leather goods city called Picheng (皮 城). Since there was a point with a similar name to the north - Beipichen (北 皮 城; "Northern skin city"), the character "southern" was added to the name of this item, and it turned out Nanpicheng.
After the kingdom of Qin united all of China and created the country's first centralized empire, Nanpi County was created here.
During the war with Japan in 1944, Dongguan, Nanpi and Uqiao counties were merged into a single Dongnanu county (东南 吴县). After the war in 1946, counties were restored, but Nanpi County was transferred to the province of Shandong .
In August 1949, the Cangnan Special Region (沧 南 专区) was established, and the county became part of it. In May 1950, Cangnan Special District was disbanded, and Nanpi County became part of the Dezhou Special Region (德州 专区).
In November 1952, the county was transferred to Hebei Province and became part of the Qangxian Special District (沧县 专区). In June 1958, Tianjin was demoted, becoming a city of provincial subordination, and the Cangxian Special Region was annexed to the Tianjin Special Region (天津 专区), while the territory of Nanpi County was divided between Jiaohe and Ninjin counties. In early 1959, the Tianjin Special District was disbanded, and its entire territory became part of the city of Tianjin.
In June 1961, the Cangzhou Special District (沧州 专区), the former Cangxian Special District, was restored, and the recreated county became part of it. In December 1967, Cangzhou Special District was renamed Cangzhou District (沧州 地区). In 1993, Cangzhou County and Cangzhou City were disbanded, and Cangzhou City District was formed on their territories.
