Geography

The Ten Thousand Islands National Park is a group of islands and islets ( Islet ), stretching about 97 kilometers off the coast of [2] between Cape and the mouth of the Lostmans River. The park, established in 1996, is 140 km² and is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service . The southern part of the archipelago belongs to the Everglades National Park. The main tourist route with a length of about 159 kilometers runs from the city of Everglades City to the abandoned settlement [3] .

Despite the name, the number of islands is "only" hundreds.

Almost all of these islands are not inhabited and covered by mangroves , but some are inhabited: 359 people live on the largest island of the archipelago, Chokoloski ( 2010 census ) [4] , several hermits or families lived at several others at different times [5] .

One of the islands of the archipelago, , is of particular interest to archaeologists, as it is artificial and was built over about one and a half millennia; its construction was completed approximately two centuries before the appearance of Europeans in Florida.

History

On the Thousand Islands, the Indians lived at least from the middle of the 1st millennium BC, as evidenced by the Kyokkenmeddings discovered here by archaeologists - kitchen heaps consisting of the remains of shells of edible mollusks (oysters), bones of wild animals (deer, wild boar), fish, ash, shards of dishes. It is likely that it would be possible to detect more ancient traces of people staying here, but unfortunately since then the level of the World Ocean has risen significantly and washed away many traces of ancient people [6] .
