History
The 105th Panzer Division was formed in July 1941 from the 53rd Panzer Division [1] of the 27th Mechanized Corps . Commander - Colonel A. S. Beloglazov.
Like all tank divisions with "hundredth" numbers, reorganized from formations of the internal districts, the 105th Panzer Division by state should have included 215 tanks [2] , but in reality it was not adequately staffed [3] .
Since July 15, she fought on the Western Front . Participated in the battle of Smolensk , together with the 104th Panzer Division, tried to release the 16th , 19th and 20th armies encircled in the Smolensk region [4] .
July 19, 1941 German tank units, breaking into the defense of the 19th Infantry Division , reached the city of Yelnya , through which the railway to Smolensk passed. Thus, the supply of the 16th and 20th armies of the semi-encircled in the Smolensk region was interrupted. The 10th Panzer Division and the SS Reich Division took up positions on the Yelnin bridgehead, forming the so-called Yelnin ledge [3] .
After three days of unsuccessful counterattacks by the forces of the 19th and 120th rifle divisions with the support of the tanks of the 104th tank division , the command of the Reserve Army Front advanced their reserves near Yelnya: the 105th tank and 106th motorized divisions [3] . The 105th Panzer Division operated in the second echelon behind the 104th Panzer Division. July 21 in connection with the urgent transfer of the 104th Panzer Division to the group of General Kachalov near Roslavl took her position.
Due to the strong underestimation of the enemy’s forces, the Soviet troops continued unsuccessful attempts to liquidate the Yelninsky bridgehead of the enemy until August 21. On August 21, Army Commander of the Reserve Front Army General G.K. Zhukov ordered Major General K.I. Rakutin to stop the attacks, especially noting the illiterate use of tanks of the 102nd, 105th tank and 103rd, 106th two? motorized rifle divisions, and proceed with the preparation of a new, more powerful and organized strike [5] . The Elninsky ledge will be taken by the Soviet troops only by the end of September 8 during the Elninsky operation [3] .
As of September 1, 1941, the 105th Panzer Division was part of the 24th Army of the Reserve Front. On September 13, the 146th Tank Brigade was disbanded and created on its basis [1] . However, from October 10 to October 15, 1941, it was reorganized in the city of Gorky and the village of Sormovo according to states No. 010/75 - 010/83 and 010/87 of September 13, 1941 into the 24th Tank Brigade [6]
The commanders of the 105th Panzer, as well as the 103rd and 106th Motor Rifle Divisions, during the battles for Yelnya, were removed by G.K. Zhukov from their posts and were appointed to new ones with a decrease [7] .
