“ Constantine ” is an American NBC television series based on the comic book series “The Messenger of Hell ”, released by DC Comics under the imprint of Vertigo [2] . The series premiered on October 24, 2014 [3] . The role of John Constantine was performed by actor Matt Ryan [4] [5] . The pilot episode was directed by Neil Marshall , and the script for it was written by Daniel Cherone and David Goyer [6] .

On May 8, 2015, the channel closed the series after one season [7] . On August 12, 2015, it was announced that Matt Ryan would again play the role of John Constantine in one of the episodes of the fourth season in the television series Strela , as well as in several episodes of the television series Legends of Tomorrow .
It was announced that "Constantine" will return as an animated series on The CW . Matt Ryan will voice Constantine [8] .
Story
The series will focus on exorcist John Constantine, who, struggling with his past sins, is also trying to protect humanity from a supernatural threat [9] .
Actors and Characters
Basic composition
- John Constantine ( Matt Ryan ) is an exorcist detective who protects the world from dark forces from outside. Cynical and smug, but noble and courageous.
- Zed Martin ( Angelica Celaya ) is a medium girl who is able to see auras or places through touch. For a long time I dreamed about John and endlessly drew his images until I met him and joined his team.
- Chaz Chandler ( Charles Halford ) is an old friend and companion of Konstantin, who has incredible survival skills: no matter what the injury, he always resurrected. This is due to the fact that Chaz was in a nightclub in which a rock band performed. Due to malfunctions with pyrotechnics, a fire occurred, and all, including Chaz, were killed. John brought him back to life, invoking the souls of another 47 people who died there. Now, Chaz must die 47 times, each time freeing someone's soul, and only after that he will become a mere mortal. By the end of the season he has 30 lives left.
- Manny ( Harold Perrino ) - a powerful angel appointed to monitor Constantine, and having the power to inhabit other people's bodies.

- Papa Midnight (Michael James Shaw) is the voodoo king, the old enemy of Constantine.
- Ritchie Simpson ( Jeremy Davis ) is an old friend of Constantine.
- Astra Log (Bailey Tippen) is the daughter of an old friend Konstantin, who, through his fault, fell into the hands of Nergal. John intends to save her in any way.
- Gary "Gus" Lester (Jonjo O'Neill) - Constantine's old friend, drug addict. At the cost of his own life, he helped John expel Mnemoth, the most formidable demon of hunger, to hell.
- Anna Maria Flynn ( Claire van der Boom ) is a childhood friend and former lover of John. After the incident with Astra, she fled to Mexico and became a monk. Prejudiced against John, but in the end forgave him.
- Nommo (Charles Parnell) is John's friend. The African shaman, with the gift of divining the past, uses “the most powerful drug on Earth” for his rituals.
- Jim Corrigan (Emmett J. Scanlan) is an investigator from the Louisiana Police Department. He helped John and Zed investigate the case of resurrected ghosts. At the end of the series, Zed, touching his arm, saw dead Jim surrounded by green energy, which is a reference to his possible future alter ego - Spectrum.
- Felix Faust ( Mark Margolis ) is a warlock living for about two centuries. He stole the soul of his daughter Ces to manipulate Constantine. Together with Chaz blew up on a grenade.
- Liv Aberdeen ( Lucy Griffiths ) - the daughter of an old friend Konstantin, who inherited the mystical gift of his father.
Production
The idea of creating the series belongs to David C. Goyer and Daniel Cherone , Neil Marshall became the director of the pilot episode [6] . The series is closer to the comics than the film " Constantine: Lord of Darkness " with Keanu Reeves [2] , although there were several attempts to show the smoking smoker as little as possible [10] [11] (later the channel became less strict in this regard and in later episodes you can see the smoking Konstantin). In addition, the creators got rid of any references to the character's bisexuality [12] . According to Cherone, “John Constantine grows up with comics. After three decades of [comics] existence in one or two issues, he is seen as having sexual relations with men. So, [maybe], in 20 years? But we are not making plans yet. ” This decision was sharply criticized by the LGBT community [13] .
Initially, Lucy Griffiths was supposed to play the main female role of Liv Aberdeen, the daughter of an old friend Konstantin, who discovers the ability to see a supernatural world among people [14] . She teams up with Constantine in the fight against the demons that prey on her, and tries to learn more about her father. However, Griffiths dropped out of the project after Goyer and Cherone decided to lead the series in a different creative direction [15] . Instead, the main female character was Zed from the original comic strip [15] . It was later announced that it would be played by Angelika Celaya . To explain why Liv cannot continue to collaborate with Konstantin, some scenes at the end of the pilot episode were re-shot [16] . Goyer and Cherone also spoke about the possible return of Liv in the future [17] .
Season 2 Ideas and Series Closing
In November 2014, the NBC channel announced that it would not order additional episodes for the already existing 13 episodes of the first season, although it does not exclude the possibility that the second season will still be [18] . In January 2015, after doubts arose that the show would be extended, NBC President Jennifer Salk said the following: “We wish the series long life. He has a large television audience, he is watched by young people. We love him and talk about it without hiding. ” NBC Entertainment Director Robert Greenblatt added that “we are on the side of the majority . Even more ” [19] . In February 2015, Cherone confirmed that at that time there was no talk of closing the series, and the creators should convey ideas about the second season by May 2015 [20] . In mid-April, Cherone talked about "general shooting," about a possible extension of the series, and added: "Although we have optimized the working day for NBC, we still remain a rather costly show. NBC’s decision will depend more on new pilot episodes and how these new shows will feel against the backdrop of Grimm , better or worse than Konstantin ” [21] . On April 23, Cherone tweeted that producers should submit their ideas by April 27, 2015, which is earlier than anticipated in February of that year, since the channel should decide on an extension in early May [22] . After this period, Cherone wrote that “an NBC spokesperson told the fans that they were happy with everything” and that “if the show can hope for something more, it's all thanks to the fans” [23] [24] .
On May 8, 2015, NBC refused to renew Konstantin on its own network due to budget problems, which prompted Warner Bros. start attempts to revive the series on another network [25] . A month later, the series was officially closed, and contracts with Cherone and other producers were terminated. According to Cherone, Warner Bros / Television "tried to find a new home for the show ... but could not" and declared the series "completed." After many requests from fans to revive the series, Cherone added: “We leave behind loyal and loving fans who believe in the series and are touched by our efforts. It's really sad to upset such significant, special, active fans. You all deserve those many seasons of the series that we have planned for you, and we are extremely sad that we could not provide them for you ” [26] .

Amazon UK [41] owned the rights to the show in the UK, and Stan [42] in Australia. From September 24, 2015, the series was broadcast on the Canadian channel Shomi [43] , from July 1, 2016 - on the American channel CW Seed [43] .
Spin Offs and Related Shows
Web Series
Especially for the extension of the series for the second season, DC Entertainment together with Cool Town Creations released the web series John Con Noir , based on puppet and plasticine animation [44] [45] . The first episode was published on YouTube and on the DC Comics official website on January 16, 2015 as an addition to the start of the second half of the first season of the main series [44] .
Matt Ryan voices John Constantine, who, after Goyer and Cherone are missing, is looking for new show runners for the project. If the mission of Konstantin is a failure, then the NBC channel will have no choice but to close the show.
Universe Arrows
Crossover with Strela and Legends of Tomorrow
In May 2015, Stephen Amell revealed that DC Entertainment had been negotiating with him over the intention of introducing the character of the Strela television series Oliver Queen to the Constantine series; Matt Ryan’s character is an expert on the Lazar Pits, a concept already used in the Strela series [46] . In August 2015, it was announced that Konstantin ( Matt Ryan ) from the NBC series of the same name would appear in the fourth season of Strela, in the episode Zaganny, and would become “an ally for once” to “get rid of the consequences of the resurrection of Sarah Lance ( Katie Lotz) in the Pit of Lazarus Ras al Ghul ” [47] [48] [49] . Since both series were shot at the same studio, the creators were able to use props from the filming of the series "Constantine". The director of the episodes of this series, David Bedham, took over the director's chair on the set of the Zagannyi series [48] . Guggenheim admitted that everyone had the feeling that they were “creating a full crossover between Konstantin and Strela, it was so exciting .... that we are really glad that we got a chance to see Matt Ryan in the role of Constantine, at least one more time. In my opinion, you will immediately notice how well it fits into our universe. He does not feel constrained, he feels wonderful ” [50] . In August 2016, when asked why Konstantin did not return to Strela or any other series of the same fictional universe, despite the positive reviews from critics, Berlanti answered as follows: “Konstantin exists in his own particular world of the DC universe” and, according to producer, DC has already "explored the possible character development in the future" [51] . Also, Konstantin will appear in the series 10 of the season 3 of "Legends of Tomorrow" under the name "Daddy Darkhest"
Animated Rebirth
In January 2017, it was announced that the series "Constantine" would return as an animation on The CW Seed. The CW President Mark Pedowitz warned that “at the moment” there are no plans for the appearance of Konstantin, who will be voiced again by Matt Ryan, in the series of the Arrow Universe. Nevertheless, the appearance of a previously closed project in the new animated web series and other characters is also possible [52] . The executive producers of this project will be Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Goyer [53] .

Reviews
The pilot episode of the series received mixed reviews from critics [67] . On the Rotten Tomatoes , the series has 72% positive reviews and an overall rating of 6.2 out of 10 based on 46 reviews. The consensus is as follows: “A terrible atmosphere, high-end action and great special effects, along with a friendly touch of humor, help Konstantin hide the holes in the plot and show the protagonist’s version close to the one from the comics” [68] . On the Metacritic website, using an average rating, Konstantin was rated 52 out of 100 based on 25 reviews, which corresponds to “mixed or average reviews” [67] .
Release
On October 4, 2016, all series, as well as additional content, in the form of DVD, Blu-Ray, and as downloadable Windows Media files became available as part of the Warner Archive Collection [69] [70] .
