Biography

Nikolai Petukhov was born on March 23, 1925 in the village of Mikhalevo [1] (now the Verkhovazhsky District of the Vologda Region ). After finishing seven classes of the school, he worked first on the collective farm , then on logging. In 1943, Petukhov was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and was sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War, fought with a machine gun at the motorized machine gun battalion of the 51st Guards Tank Brigade of the 6th Guards Tank Corps of the 3rd Guards Tank Army of the Voronezh Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [2] .

On September 22, 1943, Petukhov was one of the first to cross the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Grigorovka in the Kanevsky district and took an active part in the battles for the seizure and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, dropping the enemy and holding out to the crossing of the main forces. September 24, 1943 Petukhov died in battle. He was buried in a mass grave in Grigorovka [2] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of November 17, 1943, for “successfully crossing the Dnieper River, firmly securing the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper River and showing courage and heroism”, Red Army soldier Nikolai Petukhov was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also posthumously awarded the Order of Lenin [2] .

Streets in Verkhovazhye and the village of Kamenka in the Verkhovazhsky district were named in honor of Petukhov, a bust was installed in Verkhovazhye, a school in the Verkhovazhsky district was named [2] .
