Getting

  • Heating a compact metal in a nitrogen atmosphere with an admixture of hydrogen (the reaction proceeds through the formation of lutetium hydride ) under pressure:
2Lu+N2→500-600oC,2-3bar,H22LuN{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2Lu + N_ {2} \ {\ xrightarrow {500-600 ^ {o} C, 2-3bar, H_ {2}}} \ 2LuN}}}
  • Passing nitrogen through a gradually heated lutetium amalgam :
2Lu+N2→330-1050oC,Hg2LuN{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2Lu + N_ {2} \ {\ xrightarrow {330-1050 ^ {o} C, Hg}} \ 2LuN}}}

Physical Properties

Lutetium nitride forms black crystals of cubic syngony , space group F m 3 m , cell parameters a = 0.4766 nm, Z = 4.
