History
The museum, also known in the literature under the abbreviation MWM, was created in 1980 by businessman Thomas J. Witt to study the butterflies of the Heterocera group. The Thomas Witt Entomological Museum was first located in the apartment of a commercial building. In 1988, the museum moved to a separate building on 33 Tengstrasse.
Since 2000, the museum has been part of the Zoological State Collection of Munich .
The main objective of the museum is the collection, storage and replenishment of entomological collections . All museum staff are highly specialized specialists in various groups of insects - they conduct research on taxonomy , faunism and zoogeography.
Collection
The museum has a specialized collection of various families of Lepidoptera, which has 2.5-3 million copies from around the world, including about 2200 holotypes , 99 lectotypes , 7 neotypes and about 63 thousand syn-, para- and para- types . The number of the last ones is higher, since they are not finally recorded.
The museum also has a large thematic library and archive. For public viewing, only part of the collection is presented; many samples are stored in the museum.
Hours
The museum is open to visitors from Monday to Friday - from 09:00 to 15:00. On Saturdays and Sundays, it hosts lectures, presentations and seminars for students.
