Deportation of Meskhetian Turks

The deportation of the Meskhetian Turks - the forced relocation in 1944 of the Meskhetian Turks of the USSR (along with the Kurds , Khemshils and Muslim Meskhs ). Meskhetian Turks were evicted from the Georgian SSR to Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan .

On July 24, 1944, Beria addressed I. Stalin with a letter (No. 7896). He wrote:

"Over the years, a significant part of this population, connected with the residents of the border regions of Turkey through family ties, relationships, has shown emigration, is engaged in smuggling and serves as a source for the Turkish intelligence agencies to recruit spy elements and plant gang groups [1] ."

He noted that "the NKVD of the USSR considers it expedient to relocate 16,700 farms of Turks, Kurds, Khemshins from Akhaltsikhe, Akhalkalaksky, Adigensky, Aspindzsky, Bogdanovsky districts, some village councils of the Adzharian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic . " On July 31, the State Defense Committee adopted a decree (No. 6279, “top secret”) on eviction from the Georgian SSR to the Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Uzbek SSR, as noted in the documents of the Special Settlement Division of the NKVD of the USSR, 45,516 Meskhetian Turks [2] . The whole operation, by order of Beria, was led by A. Kobulov and the Georgian People’s Commissars of State Security Rapava and the Interior of Karanadze , and only 4 thousand operational NKVD officers were allocated for its implementation [3] .

Altogether, 115.5 thousand were deported. The deported Meskhetian Turks were dispersed in separate villages in various regions of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan as “ special settlers ” (that is, without the right to change their place of residence).

On April 18, 1956, a Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council was issued on lifting restrictions on Meskhetian Turks , but without the right to return to their homeland. Some of them began to return to various regions of the Caucasus , especially to the Kabardino-Balkarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic . Through the efforts of the republican apparatus of the CPSU Central Committee, the deployment of several thousand Meskhetian Turks in the Saatli and Sabirabad regions of the Azerbaijan SSR was organized [4] . But most of the Meskhetian Turks remained in the already inhabited areas of Central Asia and Kazakhstan.

As a result of the growth of ethnic tension in June 1989, the Meskhetian Turks were killed in the Ferghana Valley of Uzbekistan . This caused a massive evacuation of Meskhetian Turks from Uzbekistan to Russia , Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan .
