Biography
Student of Frans Aert, Joseph Callaert (Antwerp Conservatory), Peter Benoit (Flemish School of Music) and Karl Reinecke (Leipzig Conservatory). In 1886 he became a teacher at the Flemish School of Music, and in 1901 - the director of the Flemish Conservatory. One of the founders of the Flemish trend in Belgian music. In his works he used Belgian folk songs, stories from Flemish history.
The author of works for musical theater, the plots of which are related to Flemish history: the opera Princess of the Taverns (1896), Til Uhlenpiegel (1900), The Sea Bride (1901), staged in Antwerp in the Flemish Opera, the ballet Milenka (1886), staged in Brussels by the La Monnet Theater. He also had symphonic, vocal and other works.
Member of the Royal Academy of Belgium (1903).
He died of a stroke in 1912. He was buried at the Antwerp cemetery Schonsselhof .
