History

In 1920, a certain Harvey Baker Graves bought a 5.9 km² plot of land on the site of the future city. He decided to make this place a resort and called it Sunny Isles ( Rus. Sunny Isles ) - “ Venice of America”. In 1925, the Holover Bridge was opened, which directly connected this resort and Miami Beach - this attracted developers, planners and real estate builders who began to deepen the channels and create new ones, pour artificial islands and peninsulas on which to build houses. Around the same time, entrepreneur built here the world's fastest quarter-mile board track (wood-covered oval track) with seats for 12,000 spectators [5] . A few months after the opening, taking a single competition, the track was destroyed by the Miami hurricane [6] .

Until 1931, this settlement bore the official name of Fulford , then changed its name to North Miami Beach [7] . In 1936, the settlement was bought by industrialist and philanthropist . He built a berth almost a kilometer in length, which quickly became the hallmark of the town, and in 1982 was recognized as a historic landmark [8] . In the 1950s, the first residential single-family residential house was built in the Sunny Isles. By the end of the 1960s, more than 30 motels of various designs were built along Collins Avenue, including Ocean Palm [9] , the first two-story motel in the United States. Many buildings of the “motel row” were demolished in the 2000s due to the active construction of new modern buildings.

In 1997, residents of Sunny Isles voted for incorporation as a municipality , as a result of which Sunny Isles received city status and a new name Sunny Isles Beach [10] .

In the early 2000s, the city began a boom in the construction of high-rise buildings along the Atlantic coast [11] . In 2008, the 53-storey condominium was built with a height of 175 meters [12] . By now (2014), this is the tallest building in the city and the 17th in height in all of Florida .
