Biography

Stylianos (also referred to under the diminutive name Stelios) Miliadis was born on the island of Chios in 1881. Chios was practically depopulated during the Greek Revolution after the Turks massacred the island in 1822. At the insistence of the "Great Powers", the island did not become part of the revived Greek state and remained under Ottoman control . At the end of the war and having received guarantees, part of the population, among whom was the Miliadis family, returned to the island. To get an education, Stelios Miliadis moved to the Greek kingdom and settled in Piraeus . Miliadis received his first painting lessons from the resident of Piraeus, the famous Greek artist Konstantin Volanakis . To continue his studies, in 1898, Miliadis, like many other young Greek artists of that period, went to Bavaria, where he studied at the Munich Academy with Nikolaos Gizis and the German artist Ludwig von Löfftz. Upon completion of his studies, he remained in Munich until 1903 and, after a short return to Piraeus , Miliadis left for Paris . He continued his studies at the Paris School of Fine Arts and various free art academies. Having completed the cycle of his studies, Miliadis remained in Paris, where he lived until 1931, with the exception of the period 1915-1920, when he lived in Greece A year after he settled in Paris, in 1904 Miliadis took part in the International Exhibition of Munich. From 1910 to 1925, Miliadis continuously exhibited his works in the Salons of the Society of French Artists. In 1927, Miliadis was awarded at an exhibition in Bordeaux . He also held several solo exhibitions in France and abroad. After his final return to Greece in 1931, Miliadis began to take part in the Panellina and other group exhibitions in Greece. In 1934, Miliadis was among Greek artists who exhibited their works at the Venice Biennale (first participation of Greece). The artist died in Piraeus in 1965 [2] . Miliadis painted mainly portraits, landscapes and bouquets of flowers [3] . Art historians believe that in portraits Miliadis continues the traditions of the academic “ Munich School ” of Greek painting, but his landscapes are already characterized by the French impressionist style [4] . The artist’s works are stored and exhibited in the National Gallery of Greece , in the Larisa Municipal Gallery , in the gallery of the Hellenic Parliament [5] and other public and private galleries. In 1983, the National Gallery of Greece organized a retrospective exhibition of the artist's works [6] . Miliadis works are exhibited at international auctions of works of art [7] [8] .
