Biography

Born in Ireland. Clancy's father, Iggy Wiggum, was a World War II veteran, a member of Abe Simpson 's Flying Piranha Squad. He died in a parade in an accident in 1979 .

Wiggum is the head of the Springfield Police Department. He has many shortcomings, he is fat, stupid, ignorant. He likes donuts very much. He pays little attention to the rights of citizens and to public safety. Often abuses his power. Repeatedly took bribes. For example, in the episode " The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase ", he is forced to move to New Orleans because he was kicked out of the police for corruption (However, this plot can hardly be considered canonical). Clancy has a strained relationship with Mayor Quimby because of a rivalry for power over the city. Wiggum has incriminating photographs of Mayor Quimby , and this explains why he is still the chief of police. Clancy is often helped by his smarter subordinates Eddie and Lou . He absolutely does not know the laws of Springfield .

His early attempts to get into Springfield police were unsuccessful due to asthma, so he became a guard at Springfield State University. Clancy became Springfield's police chief while massaging Mayor Quimby. Wiggum guarded one of the research laboratories that day when Mona Simpson and a group of hippie activists committed sabotage. Clancy inhaled the vapors from the explosion of a bomb filled with antibiotics, and his asthma disappeared. This allowed him to enlist in the police.

Later, he married Sarah Wiggum , whom he met when he arrested her for drugs, which he himself had planted so that “she would pay attention to him.” Later they had a son, Ralph .

Wiggum has some good character traits. Despite his dubious tricks, Wiggum loves his family very much, especially his son Ralph , with whom he spends a lot of time, often they can be seen playing with each other in the background of many episodes. Wiggum does not seem to be a particularly sincere character, but in general, he gets along well with others. On occasion, he even sometimes helps the heroes of the animated series, for example, in the episode " Marge on the Lam " he helped Homer find Marge , in the episode " The President Wore Pearls " he supported Lisa in her protest and very often appeared at critical moments, for example, when Sideshow Bob tried to kill Bart . Perhaps the best example is that he warned Homer that the FBI was going to arrest his mother, Mona ; this allowed her to escape (episode " Mother Simpson "). And although Wiggum often confronts others, he does this not because of malice, but because he is doing his job or because he is ignorant. You can also see that Clancy wants to do something good at her job, but complacency, various professional difficulties and his own shortcomings often prevent him from doing this.

As mentioned above, some character traits force him to use unusual methods at work, for example: using a hang glider or an ostrich when patrolling the streets, learning hippie language, using loud music to force Skinner and Edna to leave the school building where they locked themselves .

Wiggum quite often arranges theatrical performances in prison. Once he played a major role in the amateur production of Desire Tram, along with Marge and Ned Flanders . Perhaps it was from Clancy that his son Ralph inherited acting.

Accurate shooting and the use of standard equipment

Wiggum never takes caution when handling his gun, but in most cases this does not lead to anything bad. There are many confirmations to this, including the following:

  • He shot at a crowd in the street.
  • When Johnny Carson made a joke about him in his TV show, Wiggum tried to switch the channel, but confused the remote with the gun (not one of the bullets hit the screen, which was two meters from him). Perhaps this was a hint of Elvis Presley , who was in the habit of shooting on television, although Wiggum’s response indicates that he was simply mistaken.
  • He used a gun to chop nuts, and when he couldn’t crack one of them, he simply shot him (“And this will be a good lesson for all of you ... nuts”).
  • Tried to shoot the third dimension.
  • In one of the comic book issues, he shot a fly.
  • He shot from a shotgun into a pinyata (a Mexican multi-colored papier-mâché doll, filled with sweets, suspended on the ceiling, is usually hit by a birthday boy with a blindfold).
  • At the Sideshow wedding, Bob and Selma Bouvier left his gun on the table with a wedding cake.
  • When Springfield was struck by a flu epidemic, Clancy began to shoot back from the germs attacking him, and when the cartridges ran out, he threw a pistol at them in desperation.
  • In a similar situation shown in the Springfield Cops show, Wiggum shoots the mummy several times and then throws a pistol at it.
  • In the episode " Treehouse of Horror XV, " he gave his gun to Homer as soon as he asked.
  • In the episode " It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Marge, " he teaches Ralph to aim with a pistol, and in the episode " Brake My Wife, Please, " he promises Ralph to give a shot from the pistol if he stops the car.
  • He tried to shoot an alligator sent to kill him, but he never hit.
  • He picked his gun in his ear.
  • He shot at a cafe in New Orleans with a shotgun .
  • In the episode " Treehouse of Horror VI ", he kills the captain of a basketball team, believing that this is a monster.
  • In the feature film The Simpsons at Cinema , he takes donuts from a bankrupt bakery on his own fingers and on a pistol, and when he tries to eat one from a pistol, he shoots.
  • In the same film, he shot a karst funnel, hoping to offend the Simpsons family, but he only expanded the funnel.
  • In one of the episodes, he decided to shoot a fly when she sat on his nose.
  • In the episode "Treehouse of Horror XVIII", Marge Simpson from a crossbow was killed.

The weapon handling skill is shown in different ways in various episodes. In some episodes, he shoots pretty well, controls a helicopter and even drives a special police tank.

The Beautiful City of Springfield

Wiggum’s incompetence is well shown in the episode “ Homer's Triple Bypass. ” You can also see his incompetence in episode 24 of season 9, where he cannot even catch the criminal in disguise. In the television program “COPS: In Springfield” (dedicated to the work of the Springfield police), Clancy tries to arrest the Snake , but makes a mistake with the address and rams the door of Rev. Lovejoy’s house, ramming Snake out of the neighboring house, gets into the car and drives off. The chef so informs the dispatcher about this: "Some car is moving towards the eatery in which they sell chili, a suspect without a hat, I repeat, a suspect without a hat." Clancy also often uses the books of Agatha Christie as a tool for solving crimes. When Chef Wiggum chased Marge in an episode of “ Marge on the Lam, ” he describes his whereabouts: “I'm on the road, it is asphalted, there are trees, bushes, the Sun above me and I am on Earth ... now.”

Wiggum is also unable to distinguish a real crime from a fictitious one, for example, in one episode he refuses to believe that the elephant ( Bart Stampy's favorite elephant) destroys the houses of citizens, after two such calls he answered the following call: “What? Is someone robbing a liquor store? Of course ... and I'm the Queen of England . " In another episode, he makes fun of people who came to the police station to report a crime, telling them that: “Just a minute, I'll just write it on my invisible typewriter,” including a man with a gas canister who said: “I only that set fire to the building, I'm afraid I will do it again. " In other episodes, he often turns off the radio, right in the middle of an important message, because it prevents him. He was also very annoyed when people turned to him for help: “Can't you people solve your problems yourself? I think we can’t protect the whole city. ” He also refused to come to the crime scene, citing the fact that he was too busy, but the only thing he did was play checkers with one of the police dogs. In order not to answer the phone, Wiggum reported that the callers got the wrong number: “This is not 911, this is ... 912.”

One day he refused to accept a statement from Marge Simpson saying that the Simpsons received anonymous letters with threats, claiming that it was legal, until she showed him the opposite in the police directory. From this directory, the chief learned that “it’s illegal to organize squirrel races in your pants and bet money on it” and immediately shouted to the officers who were just doing it so that they would finish.

Despite all his flaws, Wiggum is very devoted to the police and other officers. In the few cases when he was fired from the post of police chief, he dropped at terrifying speed (this can be seen in the episode “ Papa's Got a Brand New Badge ”) and once even became a street robber (episode “ Homer vs. the Eighteenth Amendment ”) although he turned out to be as bad a burglar as a policeman, since he had to sell a gun trigger to feed his family. Homer Simpson was so moved by this spectacle that he helped Wiggum return to work. From time to time, Wiggum has unpleasant conversations with officers subordinate to him, which end in a dramatic, tearful reconciliation. In one case, Lou thought he would quit the police and become a guard since they were paid more; this thought made Wiggum burst into tears.

Despite all this, Wiggum could have been a very good cop if he hadn’t been so lazy and self-confident. Investigating the attempt on Mr. Burns , Wiggum shows high qualifications by conducting a ballistic examination and comparing fingerprints without special equipment. In fact, Wiggum himself conducted an entire investigation, interrogating Seymour Skinner , Mo Sislac, and Tito Puente for involvement in the case.

Another good example is season 9 episode 16, where Wiggum is investigating Bart's abduction. Also in season 6 episode 10, he was able to figure out the tricks of local hippies. This also proves that Wiggum is one of the few Simpsons characters who is well aware of his incompetence, which upsets him very much. At the end of the episode, to the amazement of the Springfield residents (and even to his own), he finds Bart , in fact he conducted the entire investigation very well, and he is even promoted to the commissioner of police. In the end, it turns out that the abduction of Bart was just a hoax, this greatly upset Wiggum, since he first uncovered such a high-profile crime, but it turned out to be fake. It is curious that at the end of the episode he was not deprived of the rank of commissioner, but in the animated series he never appears in that capacity again. Most likely this was done by the creators of The Simpsons intentionally, so as not to violate the status quo of the animated series.

Wiggum was at least twice wounded: once during a bank robbery, and another time during an attempt on Fat Tony . Lisa also, under the influence of antidepressants, saw Wiggum shoot the Serpent, but this could be her hallucination.

Number of police officers

Eddie and Lou also work at Springfield Police

One of the biggest questions about the police is whether Clancy, Eddie and Lou are the only cops in Springfield . Although in most cases this is implied, in some episodes large police units appear, usually during the storming of houses or during dispersal of demonstrations. As an example, we can cite the above episode, in which Chef Wiggum, with the support of the SWAT detachment, storms the house of Rev. Lovejoy . Another example can be seen in the episode " The Springfield Connection ", where Marge is at the police station, where many other police officers are present. In episode 19 of season 17 ( Girls Just Want to Have Sums ), a lot of cops keep order at the school gym while awarding the best math student, Clancy is not present among the cops. In the Marge on the Lam series, in the scene when Marge and Ruth Powers walk away from the car chase and a huge number of police cars surround their car, Marge exclaims: “God, all Springfield police are here!” In a feature film, a small squad opens fire on a dome that covers Springfield. The latest example can be seen in the episode “ Simple Simpson, ” where a whole army of police opens fire on Homer's alter ego - Pie-Man. The creators of The Simpsons quite often depart from established canons for the sake of a moment. If we take for the fact that Wiggum, Eddie and Lou are really the only cops, then it becomes clear why it is so difficult for them to patrol the city. As evidence that there are only three police officers in Springfield, the following moment can be considered: when there is a problem with the light in the city, Clancy says: “We need to investigate and use all our forces,” in response to this, Lu replies: “But sir, we are the only ones in the city ”, in response -“ Yes, then we will recruit people. ”

Clancy Wiggum's Possible Future

In the episode The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase , it subtly hints that Clancy eventually divorced his wife Sarah , the reasons for this are unknown, but Ralph remained with his father. In the same episode, Wiggum, driven out of service for corruption, goes to New Orleans to become a private detective, accompanied by Seymour Skinner . This particular episode, although it seems more believable than the other three, devoted to the future, was most likely conceived as a parody of American police detectives of the 70-80s. In another possible version of the future (episode “ Future-Drama ”), Chef Wiggum has become a kind of robocop, he can be seen offering Bart a chicken that was cooked in his stomach.
