Mario Kart 8 ( Japanese マ リ オ カ ー ト 8 Mario Ka: Eito ) is a computer game in the genre of car simulator , the eighth in the Mario Kart series . The game was released May 29, 2014 in Japan, May 30, 2014 in Europe and North America, and May 31, 2014 in Australia exclusively for Wii U. [2]

On April 28, 2017, an improved version of the game for Nintendo Switch was released , which was called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ' [3] .

Gameplay
The game is a car simulator in which characters from the Mario universe and several other Nintendo games race on maps . The gameplay of Mario Kart 8 has not undergone significant changes, the player also rides on the highway, collecting items and using them against opponents in order to get to the finish line first. The player can change the appearance and characteristics of the character card. The main new feature in the game was anti-gravity , riders are able to drive along certain walls and even the ceiling [4] . During the anti-gravity mode, a collision with an opponent or a special bumper gives the rider additional acceleration. New characters appeared in the game - Bowser's minions (Wendy, Lemmy, Larry, Ludwig, Iggy, Roy and Morton), baby Rosalina and Peach in pink gold. A number of new items appeared in the game that can be used both for attack and defense, among which: a boomerang flower, a piranha plant, a super-beep and a crazy eight, giving all the objects at once [5] [6] .
Now you can play online up to 12 players. Players are able to create tournaments with changeable rules, as well as download the ghosts of the best players. Mario Kart TV gives you the opportunity to watch replay races of other players, with the possibility of slow motion playback and upload to YouTube . The game supports Wii U GamePad , Wii Remote and Nunchuk , Wii U Pro Controller and Wii Wheel [1] .
Development
The game was announced in January 2013 at Nintendo Direct. Game details were revealed during E3 2013 . 8 on the game logo is depicted in the form of a Mobius strip , one of the tracks in the game is also made in the form of a Mobius strip [1] . One of the early ideas for the game was to use the Boers to pierce the track, but this idea was rejected in favor of antigravity [7] .
Ad Campaign
Along with the standard edition of the game, a limited edition was announced, which includes an armor figure, hat, game guide, Wii Remote Plus, Wii Wheel and protector for GamePad [8] . In North America and Europe, by registering a game with Club Nintendo until July 31, 2014, a player got access to download a digital version of one of the selected Nintendo games [9] [10] .

Mario Kart 8 was positively received by the press, the score on Metacritic is 88 points, and on Game Rankings - 88.43% [11] [12] . Praise was given to the graphics and soundtrack of the game. The gameplay was also highly appreciated, despite the invariability of its basic elements. The main criticism was awarded the combat mode, which in this game does not take place on battle arenas, but on poorly adapted tracks for it.
