Physicist

Fuglesang earned a master 's degree in engineering physics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1981 . In 1987, Fuglesang earned his doctorate in experimental particle physics at the University of Stockholm. He is an honorary doctor at Umea University .

Fuglesang worked on a charged particle accelerator at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva . He studied the K-mesons . Since November 1990, Fuglesang has been working on a new project for the Large Hadron Collider , as well as at CERN. In 1991, he became an assistant professor in particle physics at Stockholm University.

Astronaut

Since 1989, the European Space Agency has been selecting the second group of candidates for space flight. In 1992, Christer Fuglesang was included in this group of astronauts. In October 1992, Fuglesang attended a four-week training course in Star City , Russia . Later he continued his training at the European Center for Astronauts in Cologne ( Germany ). In May 1993, Christer Fuglesang was again sent to Russia, where he, along with Thomas Reiter, was preparing for a space flight under the joint Russian-European program Euromir-95. After completing the training, Thomas Reiter was named the main candidate for the Euromir-95 flight, and Christer Fuglesang was his understudy . Fuglesang was trained for flights on Russian Soyuz ships until the fall of 1996 . Then he went to the United States to prepare for space flights on American shuttles . After training at NASA in April 1998, he received the qualification of a flight specialist. From May to October 1998, Fuglesang was trained by the commander’s program to control the Soyuz spacecraft while undocking from the space station and landing. In October 1998, he returned to NASA and worked in the astronaut department, where he coordinated work with the Russian spacecraft Soyuz and Progress. Later, he was part of the support crew for the 2nd long-term expedition of the ISS.

Christer Fuglesang made the first space flight from December 10 to 22, 2006 on the Discovery Shuttle STS-116 , which carried out a visiting expedition to the International Space Station . During this flight, he went out into outer space three times. The flight duration was 12 days 20 hours and 45 minutes . The total duration of the three spacewalks was 18 hours 14 minutes.

During his second flight from August 29 to September 11, 2009, the Swedish astronaut also visited the ISS on the Space Shuttle Discovery STS-128 as a flight specialist. While on the ISS, he twice made spacewalk (lasting 6 hours 39 minutes and 7 hours 01 minutes). The flight duration was 13 days 20 h 53 min 48 s.

Frisbee Space Record

Christer Fuglesang, while on the ISS, set a Frisbee world record for Maximum Time Aloft by launching a flying disc in the air for 20 seconds. This event was positively received [1] by the World Federation of Flying Disks and is included in the official list of records in the "galactic record" category [2] (since it is set outside the Earth).

Personal life

Christer Fuglesang is married to Elizabeth Walldi and has two daughters, Malin and Denise, and a son, Rutger. His hobbies are sailing , skiing , frisbee and reading . Ham Radio with the callsign SA0AFS / KE5CGR. [3]
