Story

Several well-armed drug dealers simultaneously receive an anonymous call about the whereabouts of the person they have been looking for for a long time. All go to the specified restaurant, but do not find the desired target there. Meanwhile, two federal agents receive the same anonymous call warning that they will find a drug dealer from Colombia in the same restaurant. Police officers rush into the restaurant and order everyone to lie on the floor. Drug dealers grab a weapon and a furious shootout begins.

While the agents inspect the shooting site, Mulder pulls the tarp off the face of Donald Gelman, one of the team of creators of the Internet. Gelman was working with his laptop in a restaurant when the shooting started, and was trapped under crossfire. Mulder hides Gelman's laptop under his jacket and takes him to Scully's car. In a laptop, he finds a CD without a sticker. Having put the disc into Scully's CD player, he hears the Twilight Time song performed by The Platters. Perplexed Mulder brings the CD to the Lone Gunmen check.

When it becomes clear that the drive’s security code cannot be cracked, Scully offers to check with whom Gelman communicated via e-mail. Attention is drawn to the message containing the standard number of the cargo container. The message is signed by Invisigoth. Agents track the number to the container warehouse. The figure, slipping out of the darkness, stuns Mulder, using electric shock, and disappears in the dark. Scully catches up with a suspect - Esther Nairn, a young extravagant beauty, and leads her back to a container full of modern computer equipment. Esther's attention is attracted by one of the monitors. She tells agents that one of the Ministry of Defense’s armed satellites aimed all of their systems at the container they are currently in. Despite the implausibility of her words, Mulder convinces Scully to leave immediately. After a few minutes, a green ray hits the sky and destroys the container.

Mulder concludes that Donald Gelman realized the dream of his life: he was able to imitate human intelligence, created a program endowed with his own consciousness. Esther confirms Mulder’s suspicions by saying that Gelman launched his program on the Internet so that it can evolve - it has evolved as modern humanity that arose from primary mud. Esther tells agents that Artificial Intelligence is tracking all means of communication and will destroy it as soon as it locates it. Esther also says that Gelman was creating a special virus program called “Switch”, which could track and destroy improperly developing systems. Instead of simply destroying Gelman with a laser beam from the sky, according to Esther, Artificial Intelligence killed his creator with the help of a dozen drug dealers, thus demonstrating a peculiar sense of humor. She believes that the program is on some computer - and the only way to kill her is to find and destroy her refuge.

Looking through the registration files, Mulder notices a suspicious T3 line - just the one that Artificial Intelligence needs to access the Internet. He tracks a cable that reaches for a trailer standing on an abandoned farm. Meanwhile, Esther attacks Scully and, threatened by a pistol, forces her to go to a secluded place, where she hopes to find one of her colleagues - a man named David Markham. Seeing his ruined house, Esther gets out of the car and begins to cry. In her absence, Scully manages to free herself from the handcuffs. Esther returns Scully a gun with a request “to relieve her of suffering.” Esther admits that she and David were about to leave their bodies and attach their minds to Artificial Intelligence. They were stopped by Gelman's categorical ban. Mulder climbs into the trailer where the T3 line is drawn. Inside the trailer, he discovers the body of David Markham - on his head a helmet of virtual reality. Suddenly, several wriggling grips break out of the weave of cables and grab Mulder. Mulder sees eerie pictures of a 40s hospital where nurses threaten to amputate his arms and legs if he doesn't tell where the Switch is.

Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence discovers Scully and Esther in their car next to the drawbridge. The pair is trapped and, at Scully's insistence, Esther throws the laptop into the water. After a second, a green laser beam goes under the water. Scully and Esther climb into the trailer, where Mulder is located, connected by captures. Several robots attack the intruders, but Scully deals with them with a gun. Scully finds Mulder - a virtual reality helmet (which has become a source of terrible visions for him) is dressed on his head. Esther ejects the CD, and Scully gives Artificial Intelligence what he wants - inserts the disc into the drive. Artificial Intelligence releases Mulder, and Scully pulls her partner out of the trailer. Esther gets to the keyboard and instructs the satellite to enter the coordinates of the trailer. When Scully enters the trailer again, she sees that Esther has already put on a virtual reality helmet, next to her beloved David’s body. Scully runs out of the trailer, and Esther orders Artificial Intelligence to start the download. After a second, a green beam destroys the trailer. When Mulder comes to his senses, he tells Scully that Esther's mind could connect with Artificial Intelligence.
