Young muse (literary group)

The Young Muse ( Ukrainian: Moloda Muse ) is a literary group (association) of Ukrainian writers that operated in Lviv in 1906-1909. It arose as a link in the pan-European movement for updating literature of the late XIX - early XX century.

Community Description

The community existed in 1906-1909. in Lviv. The press organ of the Young Muse was the magazine Svit ( Russian World ).

Among the founders and leaders were Bogdan Lepky , Peter Karmansky , Mikhail Yatskiv , Sidor Tverdokhlib , Vasily Pachovsky , Ostap Lutsky . Representatives of different genres and types of art were close to the Young Muse, including Mikhail Rudnitsky , Stanislav Lyudkevich , Ivan Severin and others.

In the literature, “Young Muse” focused on modernism .

Members of the Young Muse proclaimed the following artistic principles:

  1. The need for new means of artistic analysis of reality.
  2. The loss of faith in beauty, the ideally spiritual foundations of a person, the materialization of longing, the poetization of sadness, suffering, pain, painted with traditional motifs of folklore and poetic themes should acquire a universal sound.
  3. The "Younger Muscovites" denied realism and Narodnik traditions.
  4. Addressing new topics, primarily beauty, love, sadness, the mood of suicide and the like.
  5. The cult of poetry as beauty, " art for art's sake ", the ideals of aesthetics .
  6. The dominance of the subjective beginning.
  7. The desire to enrich the poetic language, the arsenal of artistic images, getting rid of the accepted formulas, creative transformation of the achievements of modern European trends.
  8. Carefree creativity, youth rebellion .
  9. The introduction of Ukrainian secession motives into Ukrainian literature.

Members of the “Young Muse” in their works often turned to the motives of antiquity , the Middle Ages and Eastern culture , all that Europeanized Ukrainian culture. However, the literary group did not work out clear program documents.

The hero of the creative work of “Young-Muzovtsev” was a typical hero of that time - a person with a particularly sensitive spiritual character, neurotic, always dissatisfied and dissatisfied with himself and the world around him, a weak, passive person, fleeing from problems into the world of dreams and fantasies invented by him.

Being modernists, members of the Young Muse were criticized by writers of the older generation.

"Young Muse" was an open association of creators, so the exact number of its members is not countable.

The venue for the creative meetings of the members of the Young Muse was the Lviv cafe Monopol.
