Brief Biography and Career
Born February 2, 1932 in Suzhou ( Jiangsu Province).
At the age of twenty, she joined the traveling theater troupe, in which she worked until the early 1950s. At the same time, she met and married her colleague Jiang Nan (also in the future film actor Shaw Brothers ).
By 1951, settles in Hong Kong and then begins to work in the cinema, first “behind the scenes” (in dubbing and “from the author”), and then in screen roles. Since 1958, he has been working at the Shaw Brothers film company, in some cases acting as an assistant director, as well as working at a film studio (already having Malay-Singaporean connections and initially targeting the international commercial distribution of his cinema), organizing and operating a dubbing department.
The repertoire of Gao Baoshu is characterized by the roles of strong-willed, even tough women, sometimes overwhelming male partners (for example, in the roles of the stepmother of the main character with a spineless father). In additional materials for one of the films with her participation, Sons of Good Earth, the well-known distribution company and current copyright holder of many Hong Kong films called her “one of the most characteristic / distinguished character actresses of the 1960s” [1] .
In 1971, Gao Baoshu made his successful debut as an independent director in the film Lady Lady with a Sword , thereby becoming one of the only (up to the 1980s) Hong Kong female directors; its predecessor can be considered Ren Yizhi, in addition to which, in parallel with Gao Baoshu as the author of "commercial" cinema, independent director began to work in the 1970s, several of whose art films were successful at international festivals, but were practically not shown at home) [2] [3] [4] .
Soon after the directorial debut, Gao Baoshu leaves the Shaw Brothers studio, organizing his own film company Baoshu (completely Chinese trad. 寶樹 影片 公司 , pinyin : Bǎoshù yǐngpiàn gōngsī , aka Park Films ) with his second husband Bo Wenzi ( 柏文琪 ) on it during the 1970s - early 1980s, another ten films.
After 1980, he gradually ends his career. Died July 23, 2000 in Hong Kong.
