Biography
Michalis Ikonom was born in Piraeus in 1888. He received his first painting lessons from the famous Greek artist Konstantin Volanakis who lived in Piraeus. In 1906, Ikonom went to Paris to study as a shipbuilding engineer. Acquainted with the modern art movements of the French capital, with the Greek artist Pericles Byzantios and the Spanish artist Juan Gris , he entered the Paris School of Fine Arts .
From 1913 to 1926, Michalis Ikonom organized two solo exhibitions in Paris and one in London, and simultaneously took part in many group exhibitions.
In 1926, Michalis Ikonomom returned to Greece and settled in Athens. He organized his first solo exhibition in the Parnas society. He organized his second solo exhibition in Greece in 1929 at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus.
In 1932, Ikonomu was admitted to the Dromokaitio Psychiatric Hospital, suffering from progressive cerebral palsy, which came from syphilis. In May of the following year, Ikonom died in a hospital.
In 1961, the Atmos Gallery of Armos organized a retrospective exhibition of the artist's works.
Ikonom's works are stored and exhibited in the National Gallery of Greece , other Greek and European galleries, as well as in private collections [1] .
Works
His works are almost entirely composed of the landscapes of southern France and Greece and are characterized as true impressionism . Favorite themes of the artist were secluded houses on the seashore, boats and churches [2] . In his style, the influence of the Nabi group is noticeable.
Michalis Ikonom is considered one of the most significant and representative Greek painters of the interwar period [3] .
Ikonom landscapes are of great interest at international auctions of works of art and are accompanied by the works of modern art historians dedicated to the artist [4] .
