AO-35 is an experimental prototype of a Soviet automatic machine with balanced automation, created at the TsNIITochMash design bureau by Alexander Ivanovich Shilin. The 5.45 × 39 mm version of this design took part in the 1968 competition to replace the standard AKM army machine gun.

Design
The weapon is built according to the scheme with gas automatic control, hammer type hammer mechanism . The barrel is locked by turning the shutter, by analogy with the AK system. A compensator is provided on the muzzle of the barrel. Weapons butt , forend and pistol grip are made of glued plywood . A feature of this system is the balanced automation and extraction of spent cartridges forward, provided for the comfortable use of weapons by infantry from the fighting compartments of the BMP and BTR .
