Biography

Came from a family of Druze . She was born on board a ship on which her family fled from Turkey (where her father served as governor of Demirgi and came into conflict with the authorities) during the First World War in Lebanon (which was then part of the Ottoman Empire ). After the French proclaimed the autonomous state of Jabal al-Druz, the family moved there in part of the territory of present Syria. After the uprising in Syria against the French, the family moved to Egypt , where Asmakhan lived the rest of her life.

It is considered one of the most prominent Arab singers of the XX century . Her mysterious death in a car accident shocked the Syrian public, and her life became the subject of many journalistic gossip: in particular, she was allegedly a spy during the Second World War, collaborating with British intelligence.
