Description

Small fossil termites (about 5 mm). The species was described by the imago of a winged individual in a piece of Burmese Cretaceous amber (workers and soldiers are unknown). The head is small, round, slightly longer than its width, the fountain is developed. Eyes of medium size, ocellia developed. Antennae with at least 13 segments (13+). Pronotum is already head. The legs are 4-segmented. Formula of spurs of tibia: 3-2-2. Head length 0.77 mm, width 0.69 mm, maximum eye diameter 0.24 mm. Fore wing length 4.39 mm. The species Archeorhinotermes rossi was first described in 2003 by American paleoentomologists Kumar Krishna (Prof. Kumar Krishna ) and David Grimaldi ( Grimaldi, David A .; New York , American Museum of Natural History ) originally in the subfamily Archeorhinotermitinae in the family Rhinotermitidae their first Cretaceous representative [1] [3] . Currently, Archeorhinotermes is considered the root group for the two most evolutionarily advanced and most diverse modern termite families: Rhinotermitidae and Termitidae . In 2009, the group was separated into a separate family † Archeorhinotermitidae Engel, Grimaldi & Krishna, 2009 [2] [4] .

The species name A. rossi is given in honor of the paleontologist Andrew Ross ( Andrew Ross , Curator of Fossil Arthropods, Department of Palaeontology, Natural History Museum , London ), a major specialist in Burmese amber [1] .
