The city is located on the right bank of the river Yug (the right component of the Little Northern Dvina ), 442 km east of Vologda .

Forms a city settlement "Nikolsk City". The territory of the urban settlement is surrounded on all sides by the Krasnaya Polyana rural settlement , the center of which is located in Nikolsk. OKTMO code - 19 634 101.

Content

History

It appeared in the 15th century as a pier on the Yug river called Nikolsky Pogost (Nikolskaya Sloboda); name of the church. At that time, a trade route passed along the South, connecting the Northern Dvina basin with Vetluga and the Volga .

In 1780 , during the Ekaterininskaya provincial reform, the village of Nikolskoye was transformed into a county town.

The main occupations of residents in the XIX - early XX centuries. - flax farming, dairy and beef cattle breeding and hunting.

Attractions

The city is picturesquely located in a steep bend of the river South. The main attractions include the Sretensky Cathedral of 1790–1882 , located on the central square of the city, and partly destroyed, the active Kazan Church (end of the 19th century – beginning of the 20th century), the building of the former religious school ( 1882 ) and the Zemstvo management (mid XIX century.). Nikolsky Historical and Memorial Museum of the poet A. Ya. Yashin.

Of particular interest are wooden buildings that determine the appearance of the settlement. Houses with mezzanines, balconies with carved balusters (estimated time of construction is late XIX - early XX century). Private estates with spacious lounge and covered courtyards, located on the side of the main building.

Natural monuments in the vicinity of the city: Kudrinsky Bor 660 ha (rare orchid species); tract Yashkin bor 138 hectares, bor-collar.
