Content
Production
In August 2013, it was announced that ABC bought the script for the pilot episode written by Matthew Miller. The project was described as a crime drama with a non-standard concept [4] . On January 23, 2014, the channel gave the green light to the filming of the pilot episode, directed by Brad Anderson [5] .
Casting for the main roles began in February 2014. Judd Hirsch became the first actor to receive a regular role in the pilot, February 19 [6] . On February 21, it was announced that Joan Griffith would play a leading role in the pilot. [7] March 10, Alana De La Garza signed up to play a leading female role as a detective, with whom the protagonist collaborates [8] . On March 14, Barbara Yves Harris , Joel David Moore, and Donnie Keshawartz received the remaining regular supporting roles in the pilot [9] .
On May 8, 2014, ABC ordered the shooting of the first season of the series for broadcast in the 2014–2015 season [2] [10] . It is noteworthy that the series was the only dramatic novelty of the channel, produced by Warner Bros. Television , not ABC Studios [2] .
After ordering the series, in July 2014, Barbara Yves Harris left the series, and Lorraine Toussin, in turn, was invited to the regular role of the fifty-year-old police veteran, Lieutenant Joanna Reese, who is the new boss for the character De La Garza [11] . On August 26, 2014, a month before the television premiere, a pilot episode was posted online for free viewing on Hulu Plus [12] .
On November 7, 2014, despite weak ratings, the channel extended the series for a full season of twenty-two episodes [13] .
Actors and Characters
Basic composition
- Dr. Henry Morgan ( Yoan Griffith ) - the protagonist of the series. Forensic expert in New York Police, who is already 235 years old. He was born on September 19, 1779, and died for the first time on April 1, 1814 at the age of 35. He still has not revealed the reasons for his immortality, but continues to look for a way to get rid of it. In many ways, Henry is very old-fashioned, for example, he does not like modern popular music, preferring the classics, does not use a mobile phone and does not have a car. However, his two-century life allowed him to collect in his head a huge amount of information about the world and people's behavior, which made him an extremely useful expert. Previously, he worked as a doctor, but was forced to give up this profession when he left the patient to die to hide his secret and experienced strong remorse from it.
- Detective Joe Martinez ( Alan De La Garza ) is Henry's partner in investigations. He is very impressed by his enormous knowledge, but hardly endures Morgan's oddities. Constantly wants to know him better, but Henry stubbornly holds the image of mystery and tells Joe little about his past. A year before the events of the series, she lost her husband, and her father was a criminal. It is possible that Joe is not indifferent to Henry. In the series finale, Henry decided to reveal his secret to her.
- Lucas Wall ( Joel David Moore ) is Henry's assistant. He knows little about his boss, but he has managed to study his habits well. A lover of comics and movies.
- Detective Mike Henson (Donnie Keshawartz) is Joe's official partner. He is rather sarcastic towards Henry and not so much admires his knowledge, sometimes trying to compete with him.
- Lt. Joanna Reese ( Lorraine Toussin ) is the boss of Joe and Henry. It is quite strict and demanding, but it knows how to sympathize and is ready to support subordinates in difficult times.
- Abraham "Abe" Morgan ( Judd Hirsch ) is an elderly owner of an antique shop, Henry's adoptive son and his only confidant (it later turned out to be his distant indirect descendant). Henry found him as a baby in a concentration camp for Jews during World War II, and he adopted him with his then wife Abigail. Abe is the only person around Henry who knows his secret. A recurring element of the series is that Abe regularly tries to help his father become more modern, but in the end he is imbued with his old-fashioned habits and tastes. Sometimes Henry and Joe help in investigations, using his stealth and connections in the antique world.
Background Composition
- Abigail Morgan ( Mackenzie Mozie and Janet Zarish) - Henry's beloved wife in the 20th century, Abe's adoptive mother. She was born in 1921 and at the time of meeting Henry at the end of World War II she was 24 years old. After living with Henry for 40 years and raising a son, she left him in 1985. In April of that year she was planning to return, but then she accidentally met Adam and, mistakenly deciding that he wanted to harm Henry, cut her throat so that he wouldn’t get anything from her.
- Adam ( Byrne Gorman ) is the main antagonist, another immortal who is already over 2000 years old. During his centuries-old life, he lost his humanity and turned into a brutal killer. He was an anonymous pursuer of Henry, talking to him on the phone. Personally, he first appeared in the eleventh episode, where he first appeared as a psychotherapist Lewis Farber, but at the end of the same series revealed his identity to Henry. He tried to make him similar to himself, and also test his theory on him that only the weapon that killed him first can kill the immortal (in the case of Adam, this weapon is a pugio , from which Guy Julius Caesar also died). In the twenty-second series, Henry, using a syringe with air, caused Adam's brain stem embolism, as a result of which he was paralyzed and placed in the hospital indefinitely under Henry's personal supervision. Usually Adam is dressed in a brown coat, scarf and a classic cap.
- Molly Daws / Jonah Payne ( Hilary Burton ) is a psychologist who appears in two episodes. The first time she appeared in episode 8, where she works as a domino therapist for people who relieve stress due to pain (the victim of this series was her client). Quickly imbued with mutual sympathy for Henry, because of which he was abducted by a criminal. She reappeared in the 16th series, where it turns out that she left the work of Domina and became a professor of criminal psychology in college, where she studied another victim. This time, real serious feelings arose between her and Henry, but Henry convinced her to postpone her relationship until his wounds healed from Abigail's disappearance.
- Nora Morgan (Victoria Haines and Jane Alexander) is Henry's first wife, whom he married before he became immortal. He returned to her after the transformation and tried to entrust his secret, but she considered him crazy and sent him to a psychiatric hospital. When the doctors realized that Henry was not crazy, he was transferred to a prison, from which he later escaped, hanging himself in a cell. 50 years later, Nora saw a portrait of Henry in the newspaper and realized that he was telling the truth. She decided to publicly expose him (for reasons not yet specified), despite his refusal, and tried to publicly shoot him for this, but accidentally killed a nurse with whom Henry had an affair at that time. Probably, after that she was declared insane and sent for compulsory treatment.
