Attica (prison)

Attica is a New York State maximum / supermaximal security prison located in Attica and is administered by the New York State Department of Corrections [2] [3] . After the construction was completed in the 1930s, many dangerous criminals of that time were kept there. A system has been installed in the prison's dining room and production facilities to spray tear gas to suppress conflicts. Now the prison contains prisoners serving various sentences from short to life, as well as prisoners transferred from other prisons in connection with problems with discipline [4] .

In 1971, a riot took place in the prison, during which 43 people died, including 33 prisoners, ten jailer officers and civil servants. One of the guards died at the hands of the rebellious prisoners at the very beginning of the conflict. The rest were shot and killed during the assault on the prison by state police and national guard forces [4] . One of the reasons for the riot was overcrowding in the prison. The suppression of this rebellion was dedicated to the song of John Lennon "Attica State" from the album " Some Time in New York City " (1972). Today, the prison is also crowded. Some of the prisoners are kept in two in small cells, designed for one person [5] .
