Biography

Born in an aristocratic family .

In 1929 he graduated from the University of London .

In 1948 he was appointed Minister of Education, in 1953 - Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Since 1948 - a member of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo , since 1949 - the Iraqi Academy of Sciences, since 1958 - a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences [7] . In 1953 he was elected President of the Academy of the Arabic Language in Damascus .

He made a great contribution to the development of Syrian literary criticism. In 1921 he became one of the founders of the literary society Ar-Rabita al-adabiyya (Literary League), in 1929 - the magazine of the same name in Damascus, and also in 1933 - the literary magazine As-Sakafa (Culture) )

Author of the monographs “Poets of Syria” (in 3 volumes, 1954 ), “History of Arabic Literature” (in 5 volumes, 1955 ). He published a collection of poems by medieval Arab poets Ibn Khayyus, Ibn Unayn, Ali ibn al-Jahma al-Sami and others with comments.

Own collection of poems was published in 1960 .
