Bahnhofstrasse ( German: Bahnhofstrasse ) is the central street of the Swiss city of Zurich , one of the most famous and expensive shopping streets in the world. In 2011, Bahnhofstrasse was named, as a result of the study, the street with the most expensive retail space in Europe and the third by this indicator in the world. [one]
The Bahnhofstrasse was formed when the city fortifications were demolished in 1864 and a moat was piled in front of them. Until that time, the area of present-day Bahnhofstrasse was called the “Frog Ditch” ( German: Fröschengraben ), which was later changed to Station Street ( German Bahnhofstrasse ).
The Bahnhofstrasse starts from Bahnhofplatz in front of the Zurich Central Station ( ), after which it is crossed by the streets of Rennweg , Augustinergasse and Paradeplatz , and ends by Bahnhofstrasse via 1.4 km after its start on Burkliplatz ( ) at Lake Zurich ( National Bank of Switzerland ), Hotel Baur au Lac) .
Bahnhofstrasse is mainly a pedestrian street, which is nevertheless an important segment in the Zurich tram system .
