Career
Tyler Farrar began cycling at the age of thirteen, and in 2003 signed his first contract with the American team Jelly Belly , which included one year. He played for the Health Net-Maxxis team for another two years. In its composition, in 2005 he won the sprint stage at the main youth race of the world - Tour de l'Avenir .
After this success, he moved overseas and played for the French team Cofidis for two years, but did not get much success and in 2008 returned to the United States, signing a contract with the team of the top division Slipstream – Chipotle .
In its composition, Farrar revealed himself as a talented sprinter and in 2009 won his first victory at the Grand Tour stage, having won at the Vuelta stage. In 2010, the American excelled in two stages of the Giro and two stages of the Vuelta , including the most prestigious, final stage in Madrid .
In early 2011, the American won at the debut stage of Tirreno - Adriatico , closed the top three in the prestigious classic Gent - Wevelgem and in good shape approached the start of the Giro . However, at the third stage of the race, Farrara's close friend, the Belgian Wouter Weilandt, was tragically killed. During the memory phase, Farrar and the team of the deceased Leopard Trek crossed the finish line in one line. After that, the riders withdrew from the race.
July 4, 2011, on US Independence Day, Farrar won the Tour de France stage, becoming the first American to win the Independence Day Tour stage. When crossing the finish line, Farrar folded his hands in the shape of the Latin letter “W”, devoting his victory to the deceased Weylandt.
In the following years, Farrar had a decline in his career - he did not win victories in the largest races and very often prematurely ended races due to falls (he fell 4 times at the Tour de France 2012 ).
