The men's rowing competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics was held from August 14 to 19 at the Olympic rowing center. The competition was attended by 29 athletes from 29 countries.

2000 Olympic champion New Zealand rower Rob Waddell did not defend his title because he ended his sports career shortly after the Sydney Games.

The winner of the singles competition was the two-time world champion Norwegian Olaf Tufte , who became the second in the history of Norway to win the gold medal in rowing. The Norwegians won their first victory in 1976, when Frank and Alf Hansen won the gold in the doubles competition. Jury Jaanson , the first medal in rowing for Estonia, brought the Athens Games the fifth in his career. The Bulgarian rower Ivo Yanakiev became the owner of the bronze award.
