History

The Tumwater settlement was founded in 1846 by pioneers Michael Simmons and George Washington Bush, who were involved in the development of the Puget Sound territories. The first settlers were attracted by a convenient bay and a large number of land suitable for grazing. Bush and Simmons set up a sawmill in the settlement.

In Oregon, black immigration was banned to avoid controversy over the status of the territory in terms of allowing slavery. George Washington Bush was a mulatto and did not have the right to own land in Oregon, but managed to achieve this right in the territory of the future state of Washington when, as a result of the Oregon Treaty of 1846, these lands were transferred to the United States, and not to Great Britain. In 1855, two years after the formation of Washington Territory, the Territory Congress approved Bush’s right to own land, making him the first African American to own land in Washington.

Tumwater was incorporated on November 25, 1869 [4] , and received city status on November 12, 1875. The name of the city comes from the word "waterfall" in the Chinkuku jargon .
