The United States Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA [2] ) is the agency of the US federal government created to protect the environment and human health, for which it develops and enforces standards based on laws passed by Congress. The agency was proposed by Richard Nixon and began functioning on December 2, 1970 [3] . The agency is run by an administrator appointed by the president and approved by Congress. Since February 2017, this position has been held by Scott Pruitt [4] . The administrator of the agency is a member of the US Cabinet .

The EPA has headquarters in Washington . For the purpose of national control, 10 special regions of the Agency were created , each of which has a regional office. The agency owns 27 laboratories. The agency assesses the state of the environment, conducts research and engages in educational work. His responsibilities include monitoring the implementation of accepted standards and norms; some of these responsibilities are delegated to the states .
The agency has about 15 thousand full-time employees, and also works with many people on a contract basis.
In March 2017, the Trump administration came up with a proposal to cut the Environmental Protection Agency budget by a quarter. By 2018, environmental protection spending will be reduced by 25% - up to 6.1 billion dollars. Every fifth employee will fall under the reduction. At the same time, Trump guarantees that the project will not threaten the safety of air and water. The cost of the program in 2018 will be $ 29 million.
