Archdiocese of Fagaras and Alba Iulia

The Archdiocese of Fagaras and Alba Iulia ( lat. Archidioecesis Fagarasiensis et Albae Iuliensis Romenorum ) is the archdiocese of the Romanian Greek Catholic Church with its center in the city of Blazh , Romania . The metropolis of Fagaras and Alba Iulia includes the dioceses of Cluj-Gerla , Lugoj , Maramures , Oradea and the diocese of Basil the Great with its center in Bucharest . The Archdiocese of Fagaras and Alba Iulia is headed by the Supreme Archbishop of the Romanian Catholic Church, Cardinal Lucian Muresan .

History

The territory of the Archdiocese extends to the center and northeast of the country.

In the 17th century, after part of the Transylvanian Orthodox Romanians entered into full communion with the Holy See , the Alba Iulia diocese was established.

On May 18, 1721, the diocese of Alba Iulia was renamed the diocese of Fagaras.

On November 26, 1853, the Diocese of Fagaras was elevated to the rank of an archdiocese, giving up part of the territory of the newly established Diocese of Lugoj. On December 19 of the same year, the archdiocese of Fagaras ceded part of the territory of the newly established Diocese of Gerla .

On November 16, 1854, the Archdiocese of Fagaras was renamed the Archdiocese of Fagaras and Alba Iulia.

On June 5, 1930, the Archdiocese of Fagaras and Alba Iulia ceded part of the territory of the newly established Diocese of Maramures, and on May 29, 2014, the newly established Diocese of Basil the Great.
