Heraclides of Pontius the Younger ( Dr. Greek Ἡρακλείδης ὁ ὁοντικός ; I century BC - I century AD) - Greek scholar (grammar, historian, poet, music theorist). He studied in Alexandria under Didim of Alexandria . He worked in Rome during the time of Claudius and Nero . E. Barker, relying on the Court , believes that Heraclides of Pontius could be the father of the famous music theorist and grammar Didim the Musician [1] . A large fragment from the work of Heraclides of Pontius “Introduction to Music” ( dr. Greek Εἰσαγωγὴ μουσική ) included the famous philosopher Porfiry in his “Commentary on the Ptolemy Harmonica” [2] . The full Russian translation of this text was given by V.G. Tsypin [3] .
Learning Elements
"Introduction to Music" by Heraclides is a compilation of the Greek theory of music, obviously written by Roman order. Judging by the nature of the presentation (style) and a biased selection of quotes from the famous Greeks - Xenocrates , Architos , Democritus - Heraclides belonged to the Neo-Pythagoreans . The main part of the preserved fragment contains a discussion about the physical genesis of sound, about harmonious and inharmonious, about musical (highly defined, determined by the numerical ratio) and non-musical (fused) sounds. The text contains an important distinction for Greek harmonics between emmelica and ecmelic .
