It was erected in the period from 1747 to 1814 (although a full-fledged architectural project was developed only in 1762 ) and was consecrated by Pope Pius IX in 1860 [1] . It is the largest cathedral in Central America . The cathedral is famous for the statue of the Virgin Mary created for it at the beginning of the 20th century , many famous people of Nicaragua are buried in it.
In 2011, the cathedral was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List [1] and became the second monument from this list in the country.
