General Information
The Swiss women's dirt championship in the framework of the protur has a great history: for the first time in this status, the prize was held in the summer of 1969 in Gstaad , in conjunction with a similar men's competition . Eventually the tournaments were divorced in terms of time, and the women's prize, which was less popular than the male one, from time to time took pauses in the conduct.
In 1981, the championship moved to Lugano , becoming part of the spring series. This decision allowed to increase the prestige of the tournament, but negatively affected the conditions of the venue - in 1983, the organizers were forced to cancel their tournament after third-round matches, citing the inability to finish the competition in a predetermined tight deadline due to the rains constantly occurring in the area of the tennis club.
In 1986, the Swiss prize received rights to use the name European Open Championship for several years, and a year later moved to Geneva .
In 1992, a new move followed - this time to Lucerne , where in the third year of the championship heavy rains again overtook the championship, which did not allow this time to finish only the doubles tournament. Another weather failure deprived the tournament of a number of sponsors, which is why the tournament ceased to exist for a while, returning to the calendar the next time only in 2001, when Basel accepted the Swiss championship once.
The tournament was resumed in 2016 and was held for 3 seasons in the city of Gstad . Starting in 2019, the tournament will be relocated to Lausanne by decision of the license holder [1] .
Winners and Finalists
The record holder of the single prize in the number of participations in the final match is Bulgarian Manuel Maleev , who participated in the decisive game six times and won three titles. Also, three victories in the Swiss tournament on account of the American Chris Evert .
The doubles tournament also had many multiple winners, but only one tennis player achieved three titles - Swiss Christian Jolissen won all three of her final matches. Two titles in three title matches on the account of the American Betsy Nagelsen .
