Story

At George Washington University a group of artists paint pictures from a model. One of the artists, an emigrant from Uzbekistan , John Mostov, paints a demonic creature. After the lesson, the sitter in the alley is attacked by an unknown. The next morning, Mostov is arrested by FBI agents led by agent Bill Patterson, who finds among the things of Mostov a bloody knife with a retractable replaceable blade.

Mostova, who has already been subjected to coercive medical measures in his homeland, is accused of seven murders. Mostov himself claims that he was not the one who committed the murders, but the devil. His statements have already found indirect confirmation: after Mostov’s imprisonment, another murder occurred with a similar handwriting. Bridges draws a gargoyle, claiming that this creature commits murder. Agents meet with Bill Patterson, who has been involved in the Mostov case for three years. Previously, Patterson was a Mulder instructor at the FBI academy, and skeptical about the latter’s theories. Mulder and Scully conduct a search in Mostovo’s studio, where in a secret room, in clay sculptures of gargoyles, bodies disfigured by a knife are found.

A glassblower is exposed to a knife attack at the factory. Patterson’s partner, Nemhauser, tells Scully that Patterson, despite the caustic character, personally requested Mulder to be assigned to this investigation. At this time, Patterson scoffs at Mulder in the library, where he is studying gargoyle literature. Scully arrives at Mulder’s apartment when she sees that she’s covered in gargoyles. Mulder goes to Mostovo's studio, where he molds a sculpture of a gargoyle from clay. Asleep, the agent abruptly wakes up, feeling someone's presence nearby. The man with the face of the gargoyle, who was two steps away, takes to his heels. Mulder pursues him, but the fugitive, jumping out from around the corner, stabs him with a knife wound on his face and escapes. Mulder refuses to explain Scully what he did in Mostovo’s studio and visits Mostov in prison. The prisoner refuses to explain to the agent how to find the creature that attacked Mulder. Enraged Mulder beats Mostova, to which he replies that, perhaps, this creature already found Mulder.

Scully discovers the knife blade at the last crime scene, finding out that this blade was written out by Mulder from the warehouse where the evidence is kept. In Skinner's office, Scully shares her concerns about Mulder’s state of mind with his boss. Upon returning home, Scully finds on the answering machine a message that was cut off in half from Nemhauser, in which he asks to call him back. Mulder wakes up from a nightmare in the middle of the night and travels to Mostovo's studio, where she finds the cut off hand. Scully calls Nemhauser, but Mulder answers the call and finds the phone in Mostovo’s studio. Immediately after that, Mulder finds Nemhauser’s disfigured corpse inside a fresh clay sculpture, and the agent finds himself in the back of Patterson, who does not remember how he ended up here. Mulder understands that Patterson was so eager to catch Mostow that he himself became a murderer. After a short chase, Mulder manages to injure and arrest Patterson. Two weeks later, Patterson vainly shouts from a solitary prison cell that he did not kill anyone, and in the depths of the cell, on the wall, a gargoyle is drawn in blood [3] .
