Biography
Born on April 1 (14), 1913 in the village of Krugloye, now in the Krasnoarmeysky district of the Chelyabinsk region, in a Russian employee’s family. He graduated from 7 classes in Chelyabinsk . After the death of his parents at the age of 13, he was identified as a graduate of the cavalry squadron in Chelyabinsk.
Since 1930 in the Red Army . He graduated from the regimental school, in 1935 - a military school in the city of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk Territory. Since 1935 he served in the cavalry squadron and in the 179th infantry regiment of the 79th infantry division in the northern part of Sakhalin Island . Since 1938 - member of the CPSU (b) .
He participated in the Soviet-Japanese war of 1945 . Captain Leonid Smirnykh, commander of the rifle battalion of the 179th rifle regiment of the 79th rifle division of the 56th rifle corps of the 16th army of the 2nd Far Eastern Front, distinguished himself especially in the battles for the liberation of South Sakhalin .
On August 16, 1945, during the liberation of southern Sakhalin, the Smirnykh died from a sniper bullet in the vicinity of the village of Coton (currently the village of Pobedino ) after capturing his battalion with five enemy bunkers and breaking through the fortified area.
He was buried in the village of Leonidovo, Poronaysky district, Sakhalin region .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 8, 1945, for exemplary execution of command missions at the front of the struggle against the Japanese militarists and courage and heroism shown to this, Captain Smirnykh Leonid Vladimirovich was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Golden Star medal and the Order of Lenin .
