Judith, Giorgione, 1504
The events of the Old Testament served as a source of inspiration for many painters. Unlike the plots of the New Testament, they were less represented in the icon-painting tradition and their illustration required more work of the artist’s imagination. The artists devoted special attention to illustrating the plots of the Old Testament to female images, often in conflict with men: Eve , Delilah , Judith and Esther .
